GXE Electronic Suspension

Found a 90 GXE at the junkyard. So far I have bought the Digital AC system, and I am going back for the HUD. It also has the electronic suspension. Is this anything I would want to put on my 93 SE? or is my suspension better?

Stick with your SE suspension. The struts cost an arm and a leg and you can only find them at the Nissan dealer.

as he said, the electronic struts are problem-prone at this age and they're about $350 each from the dealer.
plus you'll need all the wiring and stuff for it. not worth the hassle unless they really performed well- which they don't.

it will have an additional button/switch on the center console or dash for it. I think it sits right next to the power/comfort swtich for the tranny.

It just changed firmness of the ride from normal to sport[stiffer ride]

The late 80's to early 90's factory adjustable ride control in most makes of cars were a joke IMO.....

That's funny, I was wondering the same thing. Just be warned, the replacement glass for those costs an arm and a leg... Why do I know this? Oh yeah, everytime I would have to have the glass replaced on my '93, they would ask me that. It seemed like I was always replacing the glass on my car and I was glad that I didn't have the HUD. Looked cool though. I can't seem to remember what option package that was, too lazy to go dig up my 1993 brochure. I am curious.

'93 what??? HUD's weren't available anymore after '90 or '91 for the 3rd gen. maxima. i liked the HUD so much that i had to install one in my '93 GXE thanks with the help of Craigs write-up.

I'm old. What can I say? Everything gets bobbled in my head these days... I know that the '93 Altima had a HUD for sure. Must have been the SE. I don't know. I blame the early-onset alzheimers.

I'm going to have to look it up. I seriously can't remember now and that's just sad. I still have the brochure... and window sticker... somewhere...

Man, I'll tell you this, I *loved* my '93 GXE. Still envied the DOHC of the SE but man, I thought I was the **** with my brand new GXE! I had it 4 years and put 200k on the ode. I lived in that thing!

I'm looking at the 1993 brochure and you are correct. I am also reminded of why I felt a little ripped off after buying my 1997 GLE. In a lot of ways, the 1993 was a better car. I think Nissan went the cheap route on a lot of 4th generation things. Not to knock my own car but I hadn't thought about the differences between the 3rd of 4th gen in a long time. IIRC, the 1993 SE was the first with the DOHC. The '92 still had the single, right? That was just an amazing car.

I miss my GXE, even with the seat-belts-of-death that would somehow manage to garote me if I wasn't paying attention. I think it is amusing that the brochure mentions how the airconditioner is "ozone-safe, non-CFC" over 3 pages. Look at the side-bolsters! Why doesn't my A32 have bolster like that. And why does my knee hit the side of the console? And if I'm not mistake, the steering wheel is a Momo Fitipaldi clone. The only thing I didn't like and I prefer in my A32 is the hand brake. It was always a PIA to grab it in the GXE.

Just a great car.

Oh, sorry. Yeah, no HUD that year. But the Altima did. I remember in the brochure, the ad wizards were comparing the Altima to a fighter jet. lol. I believe that was the Altima's first year. I had one for about a month.

the DOHC VE was introduced in '92 not '93. alot of people will agree with u where Nissan went the cheap way out on the 4th gens. 3rd gens were ahead of their class in havin' nice gadgets that no other car had in their time.

if you would have asked for the switch 1 week ago, you'd have gotten it, but now the harness is gone

I'm really looking for the sonar switch (the tranny one is hard to get to work the way i want it) and it looks cooler IMHO, because I don't use the coin holder (I have rubberbands for my money )

so if anyone can send me a picture of it (I forget what it looks like, only seen 1 in person) or I may just find my brochure

also soon pics of the first BLUE HUD in a 3rd gen, along with a BLUE CLOCK!

I have all my maxima parts listed on ebay, and that's one of them.
look up 'checkcomputing' in the member id section, you should find it. I charge exactly what shipping is, nothing more.
thanks

I have the '89 GXE with Digital Dash, HUD, Digital Climate Control, and Sonar Suspension. I definitely love all the features, but with 75,000 miles it is time to change the struts and I want real performance, even though the switch-on-the-fly control inside the cockpit for the Sonar Suspension is pretty cool. I've been trying to figure out a way to keep that and go with a better suspenion set up. All that I can think of would be to change to koni reds with the external adjustability modification. Then it would be the same price as replacing the electronically controlled struts from Nissan, but I would have much better performance that would last longer and could handle getting lowered, although I would lose the internal adjustment.

Re: the HUD, yes the replacement windshield on those things was at least $750 vs. $170 for a regular windshield. I replaced mine with a regular windshield, but I traced out where the special reflective coating was on the original and plan on having a piece of reflective tint put on the new one in the same place when I get around to it. In the meantime, the HUD still reflects off the regular windshield fine. It is just little more fuzzy. BTW, with the digital dash the speedo, including the HUD, can be changed from MPH to KPH with the twist of a button. It's pretty neat to set it to KPH and seem like you're going that much faster.
