Another Recall Issue

My friend just bought a Maxima SE 1992 Auto from NY, No rust on the back door bottom and very little behind the seat. Filled up gas and noticed a gas leek. Contacted Nissan Customer service for recall they are saying this car does not fall under the recall for Gas Filler. Is this correct? I thought all 89-94 fall under this recall.

This is copied from http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/

Look at the states for recall...If it was never registered in them states then it is not under the recall...

Make : NISSAN Model : MAXIMA Year : 1992
Manufacturer : NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number : 95V244000 Mfg's Report Date : DEC 15, 1995
Component: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
Potential Number Of Units Affected : 747000
Summary:
IT IS POSSIBLE FOR A MIXTURE OF MUD AND SALT TO GET TRAPPED BETWEEN THE FUEL FILLER TUBE AND WHEEL HOUSING. THE TRAPPED MUD AND SALT CAN RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE FUEL FILLER TUBE AND THE WHEEL HOUSING.
Consequence:
SIGNIFICANT CORROSION OF THE FUEL FILLER TUBE MAY RESULT IN FUEL LEAKS WHICH IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE COULD RESULT IN A FIRE. IN ADDITION, THE LEFT REAR SEAT BELT RETRACTOR IS MOUNTED TO THE WHEEL HOUSING AND IN THE EVENT OF SIGNIFICANT CORROSION, AND THE MOUNTING COULD FAIL IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
Remedy:
DEALERS WILL INSPECT THESE VEHICLES AND CORRECTIVE ACTION WILL BE TAKEN DEPENDING UPON THE EXTENT OF THE CORROSION.
Notes:
SYSTEM: FUEL; FUEL TANK ASSEMBLY; PIPE; FILLER; NECK. VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER VEHICLES REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: CONNECTICUT; DELAWARE; DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA; ILLINOIS; INDIANA; IOWA; MAINE; MARYLAND; MASSACHUSETTS; MICHIGAN; MINNESOTA; NEW HAMPSHIRE; NEW JERSEY; NEW YORK; OHIO; PENNSYLVANIA; RHODE ISLAND; VERMONT; WISCONSIN; AND WEST VIRGINIA. NOTE: OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261. ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S AUTO SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-800-424-9393.

i think there saying that it doesnt fall under the recall to everybody, not right but true i think. I had to contact larry long about my recall problem and then he contacted nissan and i guess with some not so nice words forced them to call me. I would try this also

Larry Long at the NHTSA 1-800-986-9678 ext 66281

But again only if the car was registered in the one of the Rust states.

my $.02

this recall is for every state. the only difference between a salt state and a non salt state is what they have to do to the car. if its in a salt state they have to replace the gas filler neck and add more rubber undercoating to the car no matter what that area looks like. if its in a non salt state they do not have to replace anything UNLESS there is rust on the filler neck or any other part, if there is any rust they still have to follow the guidelines of the recall.

My car spent its WHOLE life in my home town in kentucky. ky is a non salt state and we all know what happened with my car

My car spent its whole life in Miami until I bought it 2 years ago and has been garaged in the winter ever since. Anyway, what I'm asking is, do they have to go on where the vehicle was, or where it is registered NOW. I'm guessing probably now, but just want to clarify.

it does not matter where the car spent its whole life. all that matters is where the car is now. my car was still titled in kentucky when nissan bought it back from me.

The info in my post from 1995,so i would say that nissan has since expanded the recall area....Not sure though

What they might have meant was that it doesnt qualify for the recall because it the recall was already performed. Call Nissan back and verify if the recall was performed or not. Also the cause of the leak could also be from a rubber hose that vents the gas tank. My car developed a leak there.

there is about 140 pages of information that I have read through. if you read all of that it explains what a salt state has to do and what a non salt state has to do.

even if the recall has been completed and you have rust in that area again that means that nissan didnt do the recall correctly. they tried to go cheap and say that cars that were a level 4 recall were really a level 2 exc..... even if the recall was done if there is rust they will have to fix it again.
