tranny slipping

tranny slipping
My transmission has been slipping for a few months now. It only occurs at very low speeds though.. a usual occurrence is when coasting in on a gridlocked road or going through a drivethrough burger joint and then braking suddenly or not so suddenly. It's very annoying.
How much should I expect to pay to get it checked out at a tranny shop? Is this a FIX IMMEDIATELY problem?
I had thought it was because of a dirty filter and then I found out the 3rd gens have a screen instead of a filter. I'm out of ideas now!

Your tranny is on it's way out....they probably won't charge you much or nothing to check it ....but they will tell you the same thing i am telling you...
If you drive it until it goes completely out it will probably cost you the same to have it rebuilt...$1200 to $2000
You could get away cheaper with a used tranny swapped in though....

Oh wow. I read the "i want to change my auto trans fluid" thread at
http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=431554
I'm 99% sure the cause of the slipping is from the new fluid I put in. It only started slipping after I bought the car at 102k miles from a previous owner and changed the AT fluid. The previous owner didnt do much maintenance so I thought I'd change all the fluids.
Is there any way I can fix this without replacing the tranny? I seriously cannot afford that, as I'm a full time student. And I sure don't want to sell it either because I've grown attached to this thing.

careful if you decide to go the cheaper route and put in a used trans. I did that on my 92 gxe and it only lasted a year before total failure. try to find out what you can about the trans before you sign on the dotted line.

Its no magic cure all; possibly hlps and only when problem is air bubbles in the system (that may happen if pump sucks air because of low oil level). Happened to me as I followed the .org 2quarts swap writeup - see http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/24
