ignition timing on a Maxima 93
#2
I read a post not too long ago in which someone said that people with the VE engines (myself) could not change the timing because we have a timing chain instaed of a belt. Is this true? I wanted to change the timing on mine but now I am not sure. Oh yeah and to answer you question, increasing the timing will not really give much gain in the HP department but may give you better throttle response.

Re: the best way to do it is to,
Hehehe, very true, but I would much rather spend $0.00 on changing the timing than $400-500 for a new ECU upgrade that really doesn't do much unless you car is heavily modded or unless you are running NOS.

Well....
The JWT ECU would have more torque gains that you could ever get from playing with the base timing. Not to mention the higher rev limiter and better air/fuel ratios you can't do unless you buy a fuel controller. I would say the JWT ECU makes as big a difference as the Y pipe does. But in the mean time I'd guess that 18-19*BTDC should yeild good results. As long as the car runs on 91+ octane, there should be no trouble in advancing the timing.

hey guys, You started the post with Ignition timing which has to do with your spark plugs and wires, and the jumped to belt timing. The ignition timing maybe gains .5-2hp , which is no way on earth ull notice that. I have it done and didnt notice a thing. And as far increasing your timing, he is right might as well buy the ECU because little over or little less can have very high damage to your engine i dont think its worse the 3-5hp.

ok, it looks like there is a lot of confusion as to what timing is on this board.
timing is the point at which the spark plug is fired in relation to the piston position
timing can only be adjusted on an engine with a distributor. VG's have distributors, VE's dont, it is computer controlled ignition. You will need a chip to modify it.
you can buy a timing gun cheap, 20 bucks at walmart. I dont mean to sound condecending, but most mechanics I know will laugh at you if you bring in a Maxima to have the timing bumped up a few degrees. the engine will start pinging if its too high, and higher grade gasoline is required. I've talked to some people who run the Baja 500, and they often "de tune" their engine by bumping the timing down so it can run on cheap quality gas from Mexico.
You don't really gain any horsepower, but it helps off the line with more ignition advance since the timing is already in the position for higher revs. timing increases as the rpms do, so the spark is ready for the piston once it reaches compression levels ready for detonation.

If the timig on a VE cannot be changed, then how come some people with the VE have said they did it? Are they changing something else that they believe is the timing but is actually not....I have had people tell me different stories here and all have evidence to back up their sides. *******ONCE AND FOR ALL********** Can the timing be adjusted on VE MAximas?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Thank you.

According to the FSM, ignition timing on the VE is adjusted by rotating the crank position sensor, which is located on the right end of the front cylinder bank (near the fuel pressure reg). There are several ways to pick up the signal from the #1 spark plug (back left).

ok, my bad, I didn't realize the ve engine had a cps in the same location as a distributor. I have a VG and havent looked at a VE, and most vehicles have the CPS on the harmonic balancer or on the flywheel.
If thats true, it can be adjusted, but I would think it would really screw up a lot of stuff. Wouldn't the CPS tell the injectors when to fire?
