well i was getting my car inspected and saw a wrecked 93 SE sitting in the back of this place. i ask the guy if hes selling it, he wants 800 for the whole car and i ask him how much he wanted the motor for. he said he would pull the motor out and get it running for 400 bucks the motor has 170k miles on it

i want yalls info on this is this a good buy cause i need a new motor quick the 254k miles on my VE is starting to show

If you mean he will sell you the motor and put it in your car for $400..Then that is a pretty good deal..

i wouldnt replace a 254k motor with a 170k motor its a waste cause you have no idea what condition the 170k motor is in

 

you could rebuild your VE or rebuild the one the guy is offereing.

 

yea take the motor off his hands unfixed for cheaper and rebuild it then throw it. that would be pretty sweet

 

i have seen the motor in person there is a lot of gunk at the tb but yea i can refreshen the motor but it beats having my 254k motor

I don't it's a terrible price considering it's almost half of what the JDM ones are going for. I paid that much for a core engine to rebuild. I got screwed on that deal but that was what I paid.

 

Considering the car-part.com search for the texas yeilded prices from $600 to $1350 the same amount of mileage....

 

also the guy is real nice my car didnt pass inspection cause of a little rip at the bottom of my seat belts sooo he left me pull the belts out of that one i might be able to talk him down

i might just bring the whole car home

Id say get the price lower and just rebuild it, but I havn't done that stuff before and I want too.

can you see if you can get me the VE tails? Or are they smashed?

I would probably buy the $400 engine, clean it up and then over time have your old engine rebuilt. Unless he wants a core, then I probably wouldn't bother.

A JDM engine is probably going to run you $800+, so paying 1/2 that for an engine that was running and driving is pretty good. You will probably have to deal with VTC ticking.

While you have the engine out, I would probably replace the exhaust manifold studs and the water pump. Those two things are considerably easier to do with the engine out of the car than in it.

 

thats one reason why i want this motor my lifters are sticking on mine and it sorta sounds like the vtcs but worse

my dad is a mach soo every thing should be good for me if i get it

Agreed. Simply the difference in the miles is not as important as how has each engine been treated...I would rather have a 254k motor that has been taking care of, not raced, and the oil changed regularly, rather than a 170k motor with no detailed history.

Keep what you have, you biggest issues with you car in the next few years will not be the motor, trust me.

 

If it runs and goes and costs maybe $500-600 for the engine and parts (he said his dad is a mechanic, so I won't say labor cost) that is worth getting two or three years out of it. Plus, with his extra motor, he should have some spare parts should anything go wrong (things like coil packs, IACV, TPS, cam sensor, etc).

It's not like he is going to dump a couple of grand into it, like you would with a newer car. Just think, if you get even one year out of it and it costs $600, that's $50/month. Cheaper than any car payment you can find.

If the old motor is still available, there is a potential rebuild candidate, too.

 

Plus then you can become a VE parts hoarder, like myself
