Valve rattling in a vg question. also gas grade question too.
I have an 89 se 5spd with 141k miles, runs strong, hella fast. Intake, and 2.25inch custom mandrel bent catback with an hks dragger muffler
nothing special.

in the mornings, and when my ac is on, or if it hasent been ran for a while or fully warmed up. My vales rattle, and I hear it worse when its cold outside when it first starts up and as im driving, it only does it when im driving or rev it.
Whats the deal? Do i need new valves? Valve job? What do you suggest as a fix to this.
Also i ONLY run mid grade gas in my car. Ever since ive ownd it, it has never seen regular, im sure the previous owner might have, but then again im not sure. Ive only had it for 2 months ish.
Whats best to run in a vg max in my shoes. regular, mid, or premium ?

Rattle could be in the a/c compresor, but maybe carbon in chambers? try injector cleaner in tank? or could be lower end engine noise. need to have a pro give a listen maybe.
tune-up? timing? plug wires? Just brainstorming, noises like that are best listened to in person to diagnose.

well, even when the ac is not on it does it lol.
but after its warm the baby purrs like a tiger.
im not sure how old the plugs and wires are, the wires look very new, every hose on the car is new. the guy i got it from worked at a dealership and and it was in tip top shape.

im thinking of seafoaming the car, pouring some in the vaccum line, and then doin it in the gas tank and in the crankcase right before an oil change.

Valve rattle, hmm... You mean, they do clicky-clicky-click? That's the hydrolifts failing to expand fully, it's a cosmetic issue that you can ignore, unless you want to spend a few hundred bucks. If you do, however, you can get lots of other things done as well.

you're going to swap OUT a V6 and swap IN a I4? I thought the process of an engine swap is to GAIN more power. You're losing a full 1 liter of displacement in the engine.
If you're going to be FOS at least talk like you know what's going on.

There is a guy around here who has an RB swapped max, and an sr20det max. very very cleanly done and alos insanely quick.

I could care less wether you belive me or not.
But end of story the sr20det will be original, but not the first ever done. there has been a few. I even found one on google of a guy starting the project and getting 80% done, had wireing issues on the last page, and said more updates soon, never updated it. This was over a year ago. I tried to go to the link, but the link doesent work. Google it. If people can take an RSX type S motor (k-series) and put it in a civic hatchback or a crx, then why cant you belive fwd sr20's can go in max?
People take h22a prelude motor, and cram those huge turds into crx's. ive even seen a guy take a 350 and put it in a CRX. google it.
if you know what your doing, and have an imagination, patientce! and the right conections, almost anything is possible.

They are done day in and day out, some of the craziest swaps have been done and I probably dont even know about them. From some of the things ive seen at friends shops, I can say, if you have the money, and the imagination, it can be done lol. Enough said.

But end of story the sr20det will be original, but not the first ever done. there has been a few. you seen anyone swap out the V6 motor from the accord to put a I4 motor in? if you can't get past the simple theory of english spelling and engine displacement->power then you shouldn't talk about swapping anything

that owner is a moron then. why would someone take the J30A with more torque (unheard of with 4cyl motors) swap in a smaller K20A? i'm talking about 98+ accords here...6th gen (i think)?

this isnt my first max lol.
btw, I can do what I want, why does it matter what I do to it? And plus if i do an sr20det swap, its not goin to be jus a little 4 banger.
Btw honda sucks. I can say that being ownd more then a few.
As far as in comparison with my vg30e and an SR20det, there is alot more things I can do with the sr then the vg, also interms of easy to upgrade, and also easy to acess things. the vg's are hard to get things for and not alot of people make upgrades for the vg.
I know you thinking why downgrade form a v6 to a 4cyl, but if you saw what I saw when i rode in this guys sr swapped max, you would understand.
He had alot done to it, and it was quicker then a boosted vg, or even a boosted ve, he has lots of time and money into it, and it took him a good while to get to that, but thats what im doin, no reason to rag on me for wanting to start a project and making something my own. at least im doing something diff, not something that you can always find in a maxima like a vg or a ve, as far as the vq
vq's are really expensive and hard to get ahold of. IM working with what I have and doing what makes me happy. dont ragg on what i do, worry about your own.

you have 4 months...so figure ummm mid march i'll see a ton of pics from you on your SR20 swap...right? don't forget to get the digicam NOW so there will be NO excuses. the cheapest ones are around 100 bucks and it takes ok pics.
FYI: VQ motors are a dime a dozen. nissan used the VQ block in virtually every V6 platform since they introduced the VQ.
from this point forward whatever you say about this SR/RB swap in your car is total BS until you show me otherwise.
oh and by the way...i would love to see your friend's SR swap into his maxima. oh wait...no camera yet right? you think you're the first n00b that claims to do a swap in the near future?
