Tire Size Question

I realize this has probably been asked a million times, and I will delete the thread once I get a definite answer, but if I were to get 17" rims, what tire size would I need to get, and what would the average price be per tire? (I don't need top of the line tires, just something decent)

Thanks a lot guys.

I have Parnelli Jones R-series 235/45 R17 on a set of KMCs chromies from my late 92 se. Cost me about a buck and a half each tire, but well worth it to have the unsurpassed traction that it gave to me. Saved my a-- more than once. Get some good rubber!!

please buy from them and no ne else. They have the best deals and fast FREEEEE shipping! no one can or will beat there prices.
hankook, Kumho's and falkens are the best IMO. for the price, and the quality.
i had a set of Kumho's on the rear, and falken on the front. last me twice as long as some cheap goodyears or some perellie's last. Screw the crap.
get falken!

Does the width of the wheel matter when shopping for tires? I assume that when a wheel says 17x8, or 17x9 for example, the 8 and 9 stand for width? I don't even know so please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm interested in buying wheels that have a 5x114.3 (5x4.5) bolt pattern and apparently an 8.5 "width" (17x8.5)... though I think the seller is wrong because I've only seen 17x8 and 17x9 with these wheels when searching around the internet.

At any rate, if they are indeed 17x8.5 with a 5x4.5 bolt pattern, will they fit my car?

Thanks for the help so far!

edit - I forgot to mention I would like for my speedometer to stay as accurate as possible and so far I got two different responses on what size tire to get. So I guess I should rephrase the question: What size tire should I get for 17" wheels to keep the speedometer accurate?

I run 235/45 as well, I have Yokohoma ES100's. I love them, they go about the same price, but they don't last very long

there is a tire and wheel section with a tire calculator.

most tire places don't recommend anything wider than a 225/45/17 on a 17x7 rim. If you have 17x8, than you can easily put a 235/45/17, as long as the offset keeps the rim away from the struts. I have 17x7 42mm offset and they are VERY close to the rear struts. If you have 17x8 I think you need more like a 32mm offset with 235/45/17s to clear the strut. You can also put 215/50/17s on and they are usually a little cheaper and are the closest circumference to the stock size.

Prices for tires are going to be anywhere from about $90-$150 each. If you buy the tires seperate online, you have to pay extra for mounting and balancing. A lot of tire places will mount and balance free if you buy tires from them. You usually need to pay extra for valve stems and lug nuts if you don't have them. I think my tires mounted and everything were just over $500. I already had lug nuts, but no valve stems.

You should have said what your price range is for "decent" tires. I will agree with Falkens and Kumho's, but I would put Wanli and Hankook in a lower level. I was going to buy a set of Kumhos, but changed my mind and got some Kelly EVO-Z (same tire as a Goodyear F1 GS-D2, made by Goodyear in the same factory, etc). They were about $120 each and have a higher treadwear rating than most performance tires. They have awesome grip on both wet and dry. Previously, I had Toyo Proxes FZ4 and I liked them well enough.

Ok but what about 17x8.5? Like I said the seller says that they are 17x8.5 but I don't think he's right because I've never seen them in 17x8.5 anywhere else(only 17x8 and 17x9). All I'm asking is if they will work on the car? They are ROH RT's by the way: http://www.skulte.com/ROH_rt.jpg

So if they are not 17x8.5 they are either 17x8 or 17x9. Will both work on the car?

Thanks a lot.

forget about a rim bigger than 8 inches. for 8 inch wide look for like 30-34 offset.

Son of a b*tch they are 17x9.

So there's no chance they would fit then huh? I found THE BEST deal ever on 4 of these wheels.

Just for reference they are ROH RT's 17x9 5x4.5 bolt pattern.

If anyone can confirm FOR SURE whether or not they would work I would really appreciate it!

This is an 18x8 with 30mm offset. 225-45s. Now imagine 1" wider wheel and 245 to 255s that you would have to run.

If the offsets were dead on perfect I bet I could go 8.5".

5th gen muffler. Actually it's the old site owner's old muffler. Very good muffler IMHO. Stock sound when at idle or midrange. Step on it and it growls. I don't even have to run a resonator. And I have a cattman Y, 4-gen cat, full custom 2.5" cat back

Sigh... the deal of a lifetime down the drain.

$225 for 4 ROH RT's in mint condition.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Buy wheels, sell wheels, profit, buy more expensive wheels that actually fit your car.
