problems with car after letting it sit for a while

Ok so my friend has a 3rd gen max that has been sitting out in his yard for about 1 yr. My little bro is going to buy it for $300 as his first project car. Right now he told me that he can't get it to drive, he charged the battery and i think it started but he couldnt get it to move. The car was fully driveable when it was park in my friends yard. It is a standard and i can't think of why it won't start. has any ony else had a problem like this and does any one have any suggestions.

i think he meant that they couldn't get it to grab the gears not something to do with the brakes he made it sound more like a clutch problem

Well you did say that you think it started... Did it? If not my problem was the CPS (Crank position sensor) ran like a new car...
