Replaced Axles and now....

Ok to start with the drivers side axle worried me from the beginning. When I picked it up I didnt notice the axle nut was smaller than the origonial. So I called a mechanic friend, he assured me he had seen that before and as logs as the splines matched up not to worry about it. So I spalled it in filled up the tranny and took her for a test drive. Now the worry begins. There is a noise comming from the drivers side like heck, ummm sort of like when you have a loose lug nut or a warped rotor. A rubbing noise that seems to correspond with wheel roptation. Any ideas?? I'm about ready to take it to the garage and suck up the charges. HELP!!!

From: Skokie (look it up)
did you tighten up the nut correctly?
did you torque down the lug nuts evenly and to spec?

pull the axle nut off. measure the diameter of the new axle compared to the old one.
they might have given you a VG axle, which looks almost identical, but is about 0.1" smaller diameter.

I just used a digital caliper to measure each axle, sure enough the drivers side is smaller. I was in a hurry and didn't write down the decimal differance, but that sure seems like it's the problem. I only drove it mabye 3 blocks then parked it after I heard the noise, that short of a trip wouldn't hurt the splines in the tranny or the wheel bearing would it?

It might be that little thin dust shield that goes on the back of the rotor

Guess what?? I sent the part back through my friend and sure enough, add Carquest to the list of parts stores that have the part #'s reversed for the drivers side axle. Thanks for the advice fellas, I'm on the way to swap them out and with anyluck I can move on to the next fix. Oh and GO WOLFPACK (20-14 over Twerps)!!!!
