Check your manual: I don't have my TSM with me, but Mitchell's says Dexron Type. I not sure about that. Thought maybe NissanMatic "D" fluid, Is more appropriate. If not NissanMatic, I suggest a synthetic fluid... especially from what I've read about the Maxima automatics not liking heat and having shorter lives. Redline D4 maybe (check website for dealers near you), otherwise shoud be able to find a synthetic somewhere local... Advance, Walmart, etc. NissanMatic available at most Nissan/Infinti dealers.

Your manual should have the quantity needed... it's about 8 or 9 qts.

Use dextronIII mercon,no sense paying dealer prices for that nissanmatic crap when the aftermarket is just fine for the trans.....the fsm says capacity is 10 1/8 quarts, that would be completely for a completely dry tranny..Used trannies usually have a quart or 2 hiding in them somewhere..

Dexron III AKA the regular trans fluid that 7-11 has, the gas station has, the same junk used in 95% of the cars on the road commonly called ATF

SERVICE INFORMATION
NOTE: Nissan Matic 'D' ATF must be used in performing repairs paid by
Nissan, such as warranty, service contract, or goodwill
repairs. Nissan will not reimburse dealers for repairs when
non-genuine Nissan Matic 'D' is used.

For current and prior production Nissan vehicles, front wheel and/or
rear wheel drive, only Nissan Matic 'D', or other ashless petroleum
based ATF, is formulated to meet the requirements of Nissan automatic
transmissions and automatic transaxles. Nissan Matic 'D', or other
ashless petroleum based ATF, assists in ensuring transmission
durability, smooth driveability, low exhaust emissions and customer
satisfaction.

Only an ashless type petroleum based ATF should be used to repair
Nissan vehicles because other types of ATF may contain compounds which
adversely affect transmission performance. Specifically, ash will
impact friction response. In addition, ATF with ash is likely to have
a higher Zinc (Zn) content. Zinc will adhere to clutch linings and
cause slippage, resulting in transmission damage.

Good info...I did a search on dextronIII and it does contain ash...Might explain the transmission failures going on over the years on here....I personally think the majority of the failures are do to people not changing the transmission fluid regularly...but good info anyhow...
