I am considering purchasing a 92 Maxima SE with a 5 speed. The owner had to replace the engine because of a timing chain problem that basically ruined the engine. It was replaced with a 92 SE engine that had 65,000 miles(now has 85,000). Does anyone know about this timing chain problem and if so what can be done to prevent it? The engine doesn't currently have the VTC or exhaust manifold problem that I can hear. Would it be a good idea to change the manifold studs while they are still good? If so, is this an easy job? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

the only thing to prevent the timing chain from ruining the engine is to replace it every 60k miles or so. its no biggie at all. not sure about the exhaust manifold studs.

Replacing the timing chain on a VE is definately a biggie. Like a big pain in the ***. It's much more difficult than replacing a timing BELT on a VG maxima. The chains don't really go bad, it's more likely the chain tensioners get thin and allow the chain to get too slack and maybe skip a tooth or two. Then the bad stuff happens. Regular oil changes are the best thing for the timing chain and tensioners.

BTW, the reason why this person's timing chains failed is probably because the tensioners went bad or the VTC assemblies came apart.

Hey Jeff...
I thought you were just preaching to me about not needing to change oil every 3K?? Do you mean I should be changing regularly at like 6K or something? I am about 3500 since my last oil change.

Regular oil changes :

Dino: every 3-5 is okay.
Synthetics: pending an analysis: 8-15k w/ a filter change inbetween.

i didnt say it was easy to replace. i meant no biggie as in it shouldnt be a problem with regular maintainance, thats why i said replace every 60k or so.

Oh okay. Misunderstanding on my part James.

But for the VE30DE, the timing chain has no scheduled replacement interval. Chain driven Nissans are designed for the life of the engine. But I would arrange to have the chain TENSIONERS inspected every 60k or so. But I can guarantee you 90% of ve owners don't.

It entails taking the valve covers off and then taking the front upper timing covers off to inspect both banks. Not that easy.

I suppose you could inspect the front bank alot easier because the intake manifolds don't have to be removed.

I thought that only the timing belt had to be replaced???It was my misunderstanding that a timing chain was maintenance free. That is why I have always envied VEs.

No you are right. The VE timing chain is a maintance free item. But it is a good idea to get the tensioners checked. But that is only my opinion(not from the Nissan service manual) I should have stated that, sorry.
