VQ35 Swap Ideas
#44
I dunno, i popped into my head like 5 years ago when I was doing my VE5 trans swap. Isn't the SR20 an aluminum block? which = teh lightness.
Only 2 major problems: el mucho fabrication & wiring, and the FWD SR20 trans is known to be a weak POS.
But I just liked the idea cuz it is so unique and it would blow some minds.

I thought of the fwd sr20 maxima a while back , but I thought of this vq35 swap idea a couple months ago. I'm sure others have thought of these ideas long before me but if I can figure out the ecu dilema, I'll probably attemp this swap. A vq35 in a 3rd gen would definitely be the ultimate maxima.
Shawn, thanks for the new thread....When I talk about the ecu problem, I think it's alot more complicated than just wiring....Like you, I'm better at wiring than fabricating....

Matt I think you will be easier to completely remove the interior and strip it down to the body. Remove the old wiring harness, put in a new maxima one, and then start from there. There cannot be too many things on the car that will be different.
-Get the parts for the pedals or convert the TB using the pathy, or other.
-Engine/ECU/wiring harness
-Might have to use their gauges
It would be a very cool 3rd gen, and you would get mad props for being the first with a VQ35.
Another option is to talk to Tilley? and see about using VQ30 heads/intake and using their sensors/whatnot.
Or you could go more radical and try to fit the VQ40 from the new Pathy/Frontier... :-D *big smilez*

I've been thinking about the VH45DE swap in my Maxima. There's actually more room in the engine bay than in the 280Z and my brothers 300ZX... I'm not joking

my friends 280z seems to have a longer but narrower engine bay, so i see where youre right.
DO IT....DO IT....

Thats what I was thinking all along. VQ35DE out of a max (for teh cheapness, unless "350Z" engines are almost as cheap) 350z 6 speed and some nissan rear end. Fab what you need and go have some fun!
Oh and screw changing the harness's in the interior. Thats what stand alones are for. With a built na VQ35...you'd need it![Wink](https://maxima.org/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif)

For real, some of us need to get out of this boy racer attitude and come back to subject on hand. I know sometimes you gotta think out the box to be ahead of the game, but has anyone come close to tapping what a VE is capable of? How about builing a stout VE (NA or otherwise) tune the damn thing and put down some good numbers. You have all the harness, mounts, and sensors already there. Don't let me rain on this parade, be the first to drop a VQ35 in a 3rd gen.

Options:
1)Lighten front end using VQ30 or 35 version with whatever power adders.
2)Boosted VE => I've seen 4signs setup in person, it isn't too pretty, but it runs!
3)V8 & RWD conversion
Obviously there are more options, but...
All up to Matt's Budget and what exactly he wants to do with the car.

2. That is one setup, there are alot of hacked ones and alot of clean ones. That is what sets them all apart.
3.

Why do you assume it wouldn't be reliable boosted? You would have more problems with the engine swap to sort out than you ever would boosting it.
Also, 4signs setup looks fine to me. It's all in how much you want to spend. You can pay someone a lot of money to make it look pretty, or do it yourself and still end up with the same power.

ok this thread has went apewire.
Ok Matt I hope you still have plans on trying to get a 3.5 into the 3rd gen. It would be great for the 3rd gen communtiy. As the fourth gen guys dont give us any credit for anything.
505max94se.......you want throttle responce. Buy a plain ticket and come drive the my turbo charged vg. then Go back home and figuer out how to turbo charge your car you would love my throttle responce.

I missed the orginal post
However since I know Matt could do the fab work himself, no doubt he could pull off the swap. First thing is he doesn't need a Vq35 ecu or wire harness. The VE ecu could run that engine assuming the CAS on the VQ35 has the same output as on the VE. If not then I'm sure his experience in electronics will help him solve the problem. Next is mounting the engine and tranny, I've seen alot of people custom fab mounts and he shouldn't have much trouble.
Other problems would be needing custom axles to fit VE hubs and VQ35 tranny. Outside of him getting a FSM and seeing the output of the stock engine sensors and comparing them to the VE's, while fabing up motor/tranny mounts that would be the hardest part. If he was able to use the stock VE ecu then his JWT ecu could be used to change the VTC/power valve engagement, rev limiter and a/f using 370cc injectors and the VE maf. Then there is the thing with the coolant lines, but he shouldn't have much trouble once the engine/tranny is mounted.
