VTC repair kits

Well it's time to stop all the noise and rebuild my VTC's. Where does a person buy the vtc repair kits and tools? Is this available aftermarket or does this only come from the dealer? Any suggestions on where to buy this?

don't really need special tools, although Snap-On Wobble Extensions and Flank Drive Plus racheting wrenches make the job soooo much easier.

Bellevue Nissan for the kits

I'll be out of the country this next week, but can give you a hand on the 28th and later.

btw, the part number is
13072-97E00

and you can rebuild them using a small peice of 2-1/4" pipe, a 12 and 14mm socket, a 24 or 27mm socket, a wood stalk and a hammer.

Good Point. I read the bulletin and saw the sized metal ball and 13/16" rod etc. and thought that some special tools were needed. But if I can use sockets and items found around the house, that's easier.
Also, thanks for the info on where to buy. I didn't know if this kit was dealer only or available aftermarket. If I was smart I would have had Eastside throw one in with the new Maxima. ;-)

The Nissan dealer just off the 167 hwy gives some decent discounts. Or hop onto Tacoma Nissan's parts website.

To rebuild or not to rebuild, that is the question.....

What has been everyones results with clicking VTC repairs? Who has had problems with putting in new ones, vs. repairing the old ones? I hate to put all of the work into repairing the old ones only to have them fail again. However new ones cost about as much as the car's worth. Anyones comments here?

I put kits in the VTCs when I built my engine. They made noise for a second on the first start up which I sorta expected. There's been a couple of other times (like 10 degress outside) that they ticked for a second on first startup. Overall they have been quiet. I haven't switched to Mobil 1 yet either but I will on the next change. I don't know the state of the VTCs before I got the engine because I bought it as a core.

I seem to recall your rebuilt engine looking extremely clean, but did you take a pipe cleaner to the oil galleys?

I remember Jeff saying something about them being the biggest problem -- the gallies get gunked up and not enough oil making it's way through them.

On my JDM motor, they clack every once in a while, but it seems kind of intermittent, not really because of weather or anything. I don't really care at this point if they clack a little. They were so bad in my previous engine, that these seem great by comparison. I also only drive 1500-2000 miles a year, so I should be able to get years of use out of them. My transmission on the other hand...
