Tranny (pics!)
When I was cleaning up my 5-speed I took this bolt out which was holding a clip which was holding a wire in place. As you can see, there is a spring behind it and lubricant can leak out of this hole. I'm just wondering what purpose the spring serves?

it's still in there. if you turned the tranny over and thumped it a time or two on the table, the ball will come out.
put the spring back in, put the bolt back in, and leave it alone.
DO NOT attempt to shift the tranny until you put that back in. IF you move the shifter before you put it back in, you get to (try to) crack the case open and realign all of the shift rods in the tranny. takes all day with an FSM if you haven't done it before.

you've actually got a small seal under there too. if there's signs of leakage on it, replace the seal and boot. if not, then don't worry about it and just install the sucker.
but that's the lowest point on the tranny once installed, so make sure it's not leaking.
FYI, that's called the 'striking rod' by the dealer. parts are the striking rod boot & seal...

i don't think having just one of those ***** and springs out and shifting a couple times would misalign your rods, i think those case ones are more of a reinforcement. as long as the main springs and ***** along the bottom of the rods are in place they shouldn't drop when they're not supposed to...i could be wrong though.

I don't think the striking rod leaks, but the boot is old and a little rotted. I looked at the FSM, but I don't quite get what they're doing. If I did want to replace it, how would one go about it?
speaking of fsm's...i just bought one on ebay and now i hear about the damn ups plane crashing in philly airport....i really hope it wasn't on it...from what i've heard no one got hurt so i can be pissed about stupid stuff like this. maybe the plane was leaving rather than arriving...

ok newbie here
can anyone tell me if its normal , that my 1991 maxima tranny holds the third gear way longer when its cold?
i heard some of the owners say that if it starts doing it the transmission fluid level might be low. i checked mine and the levels seems ok. what would you guys suggest i do ?drain and fill again or just add fluid?

I know this is a little off topic, but I don't have enough posts to start a new thread yet, and it is about trannies.
I'm looking for a replacement auto tranny and am being asked if I have a single or dual overhead cam and if its a dual if I have a locking differential or not. I have a 1993 GXE and don't know where to start. Don't worry, I won't be installing the tranny myself, just trying to find one. Any help?

Read the stickies
You have a single cam engine.
It can't hurt to drain and fill the tranny fluid...Is it dirty?
Now time for me to ask another...I installed the new release bearing that came with my clutch, but it seems to spin with a lot more resistance. Does it need to be lubed somehow?

All GXE 3rd gens had SOHC and non locking diff.
Only the 92-94 SE had the DOHC and locking diff (vlsd)
