problem with clutch or clutch pedal

hey guys. is there a way to adjust the clutch or something. theres 2 things that are bothering me.

1. i have to SMASH the pedal to the floor for the starter to engage.

2. its pretty hard to shift gears. i just shortened my shifter and its a little harder(obviously) but it was hard to shift before that too.

could my clutch not be engaging completey? how can i test or check it.

Thanks
Tony

check clutch fluid. Might be time for a new clutch. Sure sounds like it.
Look on ebay for a clutch btw, thats where you can fine a goood deal on a good clutch.

The safety switch on the clutch can be adjusted....Just loosen the nut on the back side, screw it in a little closer then tighten the nut back down..

Check your clutch master cylinder fluid and make sure it is full...if that ok then have a helper push the clutch in a few times while you are looking at the slave cylinder on the transmission,it may be not pushing the fork out all the way due to wear or binding from lack of grease...

With the short shifter.. is it just physically shorter? or a short throw ?

Check your clutch fluid. It might be the master/slave failing, or possible a leak in the clutch hose[s]

I doubt your clutch is failing.

When you say harder to shift gears.. you mean to move the stick into the proper spot right?

that depends on if you changed the throw.
Changing the throw will make it considerably harder, but just shortening the stick doesnt make too much of a difference.

1. There's a switch on the pedal, may need some adjustment. THat doesn't have any mechanial effect on the clutch.

Check slave. If there is oil seeping at all, replace.

If the fluid is normal check the master cylinder could be leaking within it'sself and need replacement.

If the slave and master is ok, the pedal just may need to be adjusted.

How long does it take for you to feel the clutch enagage when pushing the pedal? Mine is about 10-20% into pushing it till I feel some pressure build up.

Also does the clutch slip? For instance, if you start out in 1st, and after the the clutch is released and accelerate hard does the rpms race up with you actaully accerating?

I would NOT get one off ebay. You can get a faulty one and then your SOL. Gotto napa, I donno about idiot zone. But if you have a problem, you can bring is back.

You have to really re-learn driving manual with a short throw.

Your shifts should no longer come from your arm pulling back and forth but from flicks of your wrist.
It took me like a good 2 weeks to get the full hang of it.

Now when I drive a car with a normal shifter, i feel like its a child's toy.. too easy to get into gear.

This is a normal feeling, dont worry about it. You'll get used to it, and its worth it in the end.

Check the master cylinder fluid and let us know what you find.

support the small guy.
AZ and their kind don't care about you or your car. to them you're just $.
the smaller guy usually has a guy behind the counter who actually knows cars, and is willing to dig to find that part that they know exists but isn't in the computer.

of course I prefer you to buy from me, it helps support my maxima habit

major bump!!!

i found some green goo stuff that seems to be leaking from one of the clutch lines. i seem to remember seeing this stuff before but kinda ignored it. it was allover my old axle. so if it is leaking its not going anywhere fast. heres a pic.

if the fluid level is fine it could posibly be your clutch pedal bracket mine broke at the very top bolt it riped the thin metal around the nutsert. the proper way to fix this would be to take the dash apart and weld it back together and reinforce it but i just used 3 selftapping screws for a temp fix and it worked fine

but your problem is proboly the master or slave cylinder leaking although that doesnt explain why your starter pinswitch is out of adjustment
