Replace outer cv boot

Has anyone had any luck with those split cv boot replacements that wrap around an in place cv shaft without pulling the wheel and brake and such off? Do they last at all or should I just disassemble the wheel and put on the standard one?

It's really not that much more expensive to just buy a new axle. A reman. axle from NAPA is like $70 (+ core charge) and includes the boots. The boot is around $15, I think.

Once you tear up the boot, I would just up for another axle. You don't know how much crap got in there when the boot was torn and doing all that work (taking everything apart and replacing the boot) only to have the axle possibly fail a few months later would be a real b!tch.

Dig around through some of the other threads. It's pretty straightforward, just sometimes it's a real b!tch to get them out, especially the passenger side.

Do you already have your car apart?

If you don't have the right tools (particularly air tools) it seems like an impossible job. If this is the case (no tools), I highly suggest you take it to a shop. D-Bo has a shop in Portland he recommends and if your car is still driveable, I would suggest you go up to Affordable Tire and Brake up in the Seattle area. There is a NWMaxima member that is the manager there and he is highly recommended.

check out www.nwmaxima.com There is a "vendor" of the month" feature on the place right on the opening page.
