Missing ve issue solved :-)

Well a few days after coming back from chicago to pick up my black leather seats[thanks brian],i developed a intermitent miss when i gave it gas,but it idled fine.....

My first thought was a coil took a **** on me I knew they had cracks in them and i had taped them up with electrical tape a few years ago. but i decided to change the plugs first because they were over due for it anyway..

When i took the front coils out i noticed my tape job had come "unraveled" so to speak...So i went ahead and changed the plugs and retaped the coils up...Cost...$12 for plugs/electrical tape,in tool tox already

WHOA!! Problem fixed times 10..It idles smoother then it had in a while and NOOOO miss...Pics of the coils below..

All taped up here..

You might want to try shrink wrap to cover the coilpacks and eletrical tape if theres still egnough room between the coil pack and valve cover.

My electrical tape smelled like it was burning (and it was also peeling) So I wrapped mine up with this Class B insulation... I'll report a yay or nay after I put them back in and run it around for a while.

Just think of how much better it will run with new coil packs

The one I had taped lasted a while, but the tape started coming apart and getting all goopy (probably from the heat). I just waited until I found a set from a guy parting out a wrecked VE.

All of the ones in my JDM engine are in great shape (knock on wood) and I sold the set that I had. I might have a spare front lying around somewhere that I can sell. I need to dig around, though.

How much do the coil packs cost for a ve motor? Is there 2 sets of 3?
My car still has the original plugs 230,000. It's runs so smooth, I'm afraid
if I change the plugs, I might crack the coils or the boots.

Lately, I've had my coil packs out atleast once a week and they're no more cracked than they were the day i bought the car. By all means, change your plugs when the time to do so comes around. Don't hold off on account of the coils.

Oh, and they cost ~$70/ea.

I had one that looked brand new (no cracks) and it conked out. It was a rear one and it caused my car to stall/buck. There is a big thread about this from a couple of years ago.

In other words, having cracks isn't always an indication your coil packs are bad. It usually just causes some slight misses and rough idle.

That sucks, but before you b!tch about ve coil prices let me tell ya my buddy's tale of whoa...He has an Audi 200 with the inline 5 turbo 20v engine. His coils are crapping out. Price for new ones...in the neigborhood of $250 EACH!!! I guess some people are trying to retrofit or adapt coils from the 1.8t motor, which are around $80 a piece. That's exactly why I don't currently own anything euro...

Yeah, they add up pretty fast, though. In my original motor, I bought a set of used ones from a wrecked car being parted and everything was fine. I think I paid. $75? It might have been more, I can't remember. I sold them on ebay for over $100, though. Those prices are for all six, used, but working.

I think if you went to enough U-Pull-Its, you would be able to round up some that work.

I personally would never buy new ones...Shoot my whole car isn't worth much more then a set of 6 new coils cost..

Plus i would rather support the guys here on the org selling their parts..
