using 91 octane in my car
Higher octane gas is to prevent spark knock[detonation]..If you are not experiencing spark knock.then you are probably wasting your $$$...

The FSM calls for 87 on the VG.
91 for the VE, but since theres no 91 around here, the next runner up is 93.
The only reason why I use 91 is because availability of grades. 85 has poor performance, and mileage, 89 has 10% ethanol added which is a big no no for our cars, so that only leaves 91.
Who said theres no ethanol in 91?

The owners manual in my 91 SE says:
A minimum octane rating of 87 can be used.
For increased performance and efficiency use a gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 or higher.
My 91 SE has run premium 91 octane since new.

State of South Dakota requires the gas stations to post which fuel is using ethanol. I get my gasoline from Sam's Club because they're the only place around that doesn't even carry the ethanol blend. There are some places around that have been fined for mixing tanks.
I've had to replace 2 injectors because of ethanol. Normally this could be written off as a rare case, but after some conversation with a friend at Nissan, there have been plenty of other 3rd gens that have come in with the same exact problem. I even compared my old injectors to those he pulled out of other Maximas', the scoring was generaly the same. Some were even frozen solid.
It's funny when I hear the researchers say the blend is generally safe for all vehicles, then you hear the butt saving qoute of "should not be used on older vehicles"

I thought maybe I had old lines and such. I then flushed the tank, and installed new lines. After a brain fart after a road trip, I accidently filled up with 89 w/ 10% ethanol. Within a few hours I had rough idle, and power loss. I drained the fuel, flushed the lines, and haven't had a problem since.

i use 89 in my car. in the north east. tried the shell V power. didnt notice any thing. and i tried for 2 or 3 tanks. it was no use paying that much for gas that dosnt do any thing. so now i just use BP or Shell 89. but i dont know if they mix any thing in there.

I use 91 octane for the quicker acceleration, and better cold starting and running. 89 octane made my acceleration all laggy on those cold mornings.
Yeah im in AUS too, we got 91, 94, 95, 98 octane. 91 is the 'normal' unleaded, 94 is the ethonol crap. 95 is the mid range stuff. 98 is high performance stuff.. Ive found that 98 and regular 91 dont have much difference in mileage but 98 does give off better performance...
