Yesturday i did the throttle body cleaning. Hooked everything back up.Car running fine.Today i noticed my idle higher. Before on park itll be like 950 rpms when warm then go down to like 700 rpms in drive. Now with the car warm in park. Its at 1100 rpms. Put it in drive goes to 750 rpms. Engine is running fine.No shaking in park or in drive. With throttle cleaning it does feel better then before. What the hell happen? This good or bad?

 

well.. the only thing i can think is that the computer has to adjust a bit from the change.. give it a day or two of driveing and see how it goes... Just a thougth.. either that or there is somthing not hooked up correctly.

 

I would check all the vacuum hoses,one might have came off or one may be cracked...

 

Just checked the hoses. All looks good. No rough idling in park or drive. Like I said when the car is warm. It drops down to a steady 1100 rpms. Put it in drive goes to 750 rpms.What i also just noticed the needle use to jump a lil. Now i dont see no jumping. Hummmmmm Maybe thats what the MAX needed.

 

I idle at about 550rpm in gear.

 

I have the exact same problem. I just cleaned the throttle body, and now my idle is high, between 1300 and 900, and the idle is rough. I have a 5-speed, and in neutral, it now idles at roughly 1100rpm, and before it was a perfect 650-700rpm. I can't figure out what the problem is... but it definitely started after the throttle body cleaning. Doesn't matter if the engine is cold or warm, still the same thing. Could it be the EGR valve?

 

I had the same problem too. I ended up justreplacing the whole damn unit and that solved the problem. GOt it for 5 bucks at a junk yard

did you guys disconnect the throttle cable/linkage when you cleaned it or just leave it connected to the intake? Is it possible that the throttle cable is a little tighter than it used to be resulting in a partially open throttle even when you're not on the gas?

Sorry if it's a stupid q, it just seemed like one of those stupid solutions. Like tracing wires for days before you realize it was a fuse...

 

Rechecked hoses and linkage today. Even though i never disconnected linkage. Drove to work today no problem. Still steady 750 rpms when put in drive.When in park its 1100 rpms.Turn the lights on goes to 1000 rpms and while in drive goes to 650 rpms. Honestly feels better than before . I was doing 25 mpg. Wonder what im gonna be doing now.

 

Ok, found the problem. I had the exact same issue after cleaning the throttle body. What happens is, now that the valve is clean, and not sticking, the valve is fully closed. This now should create a perfect idle. What happened to me, is that I needed to adjust the curb idle to "reset" it to allow the TPS to recognize the new position of the valve.

The curb idle adjustment screw is underneath the throttle cable linkage. Here are the steps to adjust:

1. With the car off, disconnect the TPS sensor (opposite side of throttle cable linkage).
2. Start the car, and let it warm up to operating temperature.
3. Adjust the curb idle screw until you have the proper idle speed, should be around 750RPM.
4. Tighten the screw lock nut.
5. With the car still running, reconnect the TPS sensor.

After I did this, the idle is back to normal, no hesitation, and smooth idle and acceleration.

I know of the cable linkage which you could tighten the cable. Does anybody have a pic of the curb idle screw .

I think hes talking about the linkage end with the 2 nuts.To tighten the cable. Because he then say on line # 4 tighten the screw lock nut.I wonder if this is the right procedure? Cause after i did tb cleaning cables are still the same. Gonna look at it in the morn.

Here you go, it's a 10mm lock nut. Loosen the nut, and adjust the inner screw, then tighten the nut back on.

 

Hmm... interesting. In a way, I was right.

Well tryed working on the idle on my lunch break. So had to rush a lil. But it helped. So far got it down from 1100rpms to 950 rpms on park. On drive i got it from 750rpms to 700rpms. Will work on it this week when i dont have to rush or maybe ill leave it like this. This is like where it was before.

 

I would tweak it a little more, according to Nissan, an automatic Maxima, with the tranny in Neutral, should idle between 650-750RPM.
