A/C Comp. not turning on!!!

Help I charged the ac with R134a refigerant (yes it has been retrofited) and then It cooled well but my gauge showed that it was still low on refrigerant so I went to advanced auto and picked up 2 cans of refrigerant and when to put it in but when I turned the ac on full blast to charge it the compressor was not on!! Arrrggghhh (Why ME !!) The compressor is only 2 years old It did not go bad ......

What should I check?

Thanks Guys

Personally,i would recommend you take it a professional a/c shop...

Your gauge may not be reading correctly, and you may have overfilled the system..The dual pressure switch will not allow the compressor to kick on if it senses too much pressure in the system...

You also might have a faulty dual pressure switch..

bleed off some pressure as r134a uses only 70% as much as 12 in a retrofit situation.
that and 2 cans should be enough to do a full charge from empty

How should I bleed off some of the refrigerant ?

They only had those 5 in tall cans so I bought 2 of them they will not refill the system from empty..........

I thought the compressor might be low so I was going to try to add some!!

I never thought It could be too high!

I can see the compressor coming on for like 2 seconds but not even long enough for the cooling fans to start to sin at speed !!

It sort of cycles 1 compressor turn on per 45sec ish .

I have 2 cans of R134a

I don't know how to let some of the pressure off the system to see if I over filled or overpressurized Help with that please its hot here and I want a ice cold car like before this problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Guys

legally you have to take it to a shop and have the system evacuated because there is refrigerant in there.
yes, even R134a can not be just released into the atmosphere now.
you can check to see if you have pressure in the system by depressing one of the schrader valves on the service port with something other than your finger

oh, and an R134a retrofit system takes a different amount than a factory installed R134a system.

Ok so just gently push a screw driver in the low side charge port >>>>>>>
I will do that but the prob is that I can't use my gauge for the AC if the compressor is not running because it gives an incorrect reading!

I will mess with this tommorow for now the dreded HOMEWORK !!

Thanks !!

(on a side note my MAF is bad so my idle is going crazy all the time it is plugged in but when I unplug the MAF and then start the car it idles smooooth as butter but when I press the AC button on it cuts the car off like switching the key off )(why is that any explination for that? ) Sorry alittle off topic but it is my thread anyway!

Thanks Again!!

same thing happened to me on a mx-6. turn the system on at full and depress the bleeder valve, if afterbleeding some refrigerant it turns on, then it was too full. it is not the safest way but it is the cheapest.
check for dirty connectors on the sensors first.

Ok I had planed to do that first just to check..

Should I expect the refigerant to come squirting out at me or just some pressurized air?

I assume both ! but if fluid is going to come out I need to cover myself

it should come out in a gaseous state. just remember how cold that stuff is coming out.

Well I am happy to report that I had just over filled the system !!

I pressed a screw driver in the low pres. side port and let some pressure off (BTW: It came out as air/liquidy gas) and slowly the comp started turning back on then I kept letting pressure off and It started and stayed on !!

Yaa!! Cold air has returned to the vents of the max!!

I am still wondering why the comp operated while I overfilled it and It continued to run with it overfilled but then when 7 hrs later it cuts off and decides theres too much pressure.... I don't know but I am glad I got it working thanks Guys!!!!!!!!!

P.S. (Grey car in hot parking lot with no shade = hot hot car)

My ac is out too, thinking about a retrofit. Just two quick questions:
Is the stock compressor compatible with R134?
How much does a retrofit usually run?

no need to change the "filter" unless the system has been leaking.

My 93 Compressor works until it is about 90 degrees outside and then it only comes on for about 2 seconds every 45 seconds. Could this be the Dual pressure switch or some other switch or relay? Everything has been rebuilt and recharged recently. How can the switches be tested?
