Well, for you guys that know me, I sold one of my VE's in February and bought a Crimson Blaze 99 SE L. It is a wonderful car I bought from an org member in MN. It has heated leather seats, the homelink built-in garage door opener in the visor, six speaker Bose stereo that works and sounds great, Warpspeed Y-pipe, KYB GR2 struts and Maxspeed springs that have it lowered about 1.5" It has a FSTB and 235/45/17 Pirelli tires on Q45 rims. Runs great. Grips the road like a paint stripe. Corners absolutely flat.
All great except at the top end it is not near what my 92 VE was. On the same stretch of roads that I could EASILY get the '92 past 135, this car struggles to get to 120. I love my 99 but at the same time miss my VE. Except the clacking. I still have the two VE's that my kids drive but I only get to drive them any more when they come home for service!!

it's going to take more than an intake to match the top end

Nice car, glad you are enjoying it

I had a problem with my old auto tranny freaking out about what gear it should be in when pushed past 110. I buried the needle the other day and estimate my top speed at about 140. Not something I do everyday, but I had to see what it could do. Can anyone that has a 145mph speedo in a VG legitimize the top end for our engines...I know the VE's will do damn near 150.

bhunter- what can you say in regards to comparing the two generation's suspension setups? Does your current "minivan" rear suspension leave you desiring more?

Since I bought it already lowered and with newer struts and a FSTB and never drove it stock, I can't say. As I bought it though, it handles great-much better than my 92 which had a totally stock suspension.

my stock 92 SE can take turns a lot faster than my buddy's 98 civic with sticky 205-17s. maybe not a lot, but definitely faster

ummm I did like 150 in my turbo vg if that counts for any thing. But it not like a stock vg or ve I pull hard all the way to 150 with 10 psi helping push it on up their

Im surprised you VG 5spd guys are getting it up that high. With the auto I could barely hit 124mph.. With the VE5, I've hit about 140, but still kept pulling strong. Weird why M/T would say it tops out at 137

My VG had an automatic lucky me. Wasnt that bad a car but I would have loved to have had a 5spd.

Hymm so the OG 4DSC handles better that a 98 shivic? Am I shocked?

BTW stock for stock, the handling nod goes to the 3rd gen. IRS FTW

I've paced a M3 when I had my old vG auto and gotit to around 135-140ish according to him. It took like a mile and a half of road though. That engine was screaming and the M3 driver was like the VG sounded insane up top. Still not bad for an engine that had 230k miles at the time.

I dont do over 90 in the maxima that much. It just doesnt feel any diffrent then 40mph

Now my S13 ('90 240sx) I can feel the diffrence between 117mph (limiter) and 65mph. Now THATS fun....BUHAHAHAHA

That also means its super easy to speed in the max, yet when I do the same the 240 is loud egnough to make me pay attention....

i was shocked, since our cars weigh a lot more than a 2 door civic

as for speed, i took it to 125 and it had more left, that was with a hollow cat converter though, before getting my tags. after failing my emissions test. i never tried it after that

my brother took my current one to 115 last night.
he's crazy, I need tires and a control arm bushing.
of course he did say it had plenty more room to go

My VG auto used to do 125+. This was over 5 years ago with 110k on the clock. The car is getting old and tired now (184k, beat on when I was younger, low compression) and so I don't beat on it all. The last time I did, in late 2004, it struggled to get to 120.

The VE 5spd is a different story. I hit 140, no problem at all. Car was still pulling.

What exactly is the difference that makes the VE blow right past 120 and on to 140 and beyond and the VQ sort of hitting a dead spot and only slowly climbing from 120 on?

VTCs maybe ?

Na meng, that ain't workin at those speeds.

I would probably give it to the variable intake manifold for that one. Could also be the gearing.

I know a lot of people here talk a lot of bad stuff about the VGs since they're not as fast as the VE but whether its as fast or not I still love my car, my car can easily reach 125+ and I'm gonna put a VE cluster in to be more precise since VG cuts off at 125mph, few days ago had to make it to school before 11pm to get a cup of coffee before it closed, didnt even notice I was going about 120mph on the highway..if thats with a VG I wonder what it'd be like in a VE..Brian wanna take me for test drive on the highway since you got me banned from CMC today?

The 95-99 maximas VQ dont have varible cam timing, and they dont have varible intakes. The VE has both. Thats why it makes as much TQ as the VG but 30 more HP stock vs stock. The VQ with just the VI makes 205TQ or so (dont quote me on that but its about 200) and 220hp (it varies with the model because of ecu tuning) but the reuglar VQ makes about 205TQ and 190HP.

VG - 190TQ 160HP
VE - 190TQ 190HP
VQ - 205TQ 190HP

Those are just off the top of my head and various sources claim those specs within a few tq/hp so no biggie.

hell, my VG will go to 130; its probably got 180-190 hp at the engine after all of my mods. i wouldnt expect any less from the VE.
