VG intake manifold

Hayes manual says stuttering while accelerating could be caused by a leak in the intake manifold, amoung other things.

When I start the car I hear a hiss coming from the right side (standing in front of the car). It seems to come around the area of the fuel rail but could be the intake manifold.

EGR is fine. Three questions: PLEASE HELP!

To fix the leak I just have to replace the gaskets on the lower and upper manifold right??

If I have to go in, any writes up and what I should replace while I'm elbow deep in Maxima engine?? Any tips or information would REALLY help.

I was about to respond by saying I have the Hayes manual and FSM already, but neither have the sweet pictures at the end of this link you gave me.

Should I replace anything while I'm in there? Like the water pump? I can't tell from the diagrams but it looks like I might as well replace the fuel injectors as well....what do you think?

you should use a small diameter hose to your ear and check around the manifold for leaks before you pull it off. there are a few rubber vacuum hoses running into your upper manifold, i'm not sure of exact locations tho.

I didn't see anything in there about the intake manifold. Nor when I did a google search on www.forums.maxima.org.

Matt I love you! I would not have thought of that, I mean, it looks like just a bunch of eletrical wires down there.

I would have to take off the MAF assembly up to the TB to listen to the noise while the engine is on but I'm afraid to do that cause then all kinds of crap will get sucked into the TB without the air filter on. But I think the hose will do the trick.

The info cutler gave you came from the "repair info" sticky....

Steps:
1. go to sticky,input 1994/nissan/datsun/maxima..
2. go to "engine & engine overhaul..
3. click "intake manifold" on right side of screen..

OH you mean the link that takes you to the website that shows you the pictures! I thought you meant in the actual stickies themselves. :

I'm used to the 4th gen forum where they have write-ups from members who've actually done the work. That's really what I was looking for. I've got to get used the to differences in the forums I guess.

I hate to bring geekiness into it, but this may help you in your google search. There is no www.forums.maxima.org, it's either www.maxima.org or forums.maxima.org, they are seperate subdomains...just so you know

if you try and break the intake chain post maf, the engine will stall. just take a long 3/8" dia hose, and with one end to your ear, move the other end around all sufaces near the manifold

yea

seems to be a common problem; need to check mine; im hoping its the dry-rotted vacuum hose that connects to the intake just before the throttle body connects to the intake tub.

Thanks again! I've actually taken the car to a reputable shop just to have them look at it, not fix anything. I just didn't have time to buy the pipe. I know that sounds lame but I work full time, attend school part time and have a family.

So if they verify any problem and they want to charge too much I'll be forced to find the time to do it myself. By charge too much I mean the pricing may be fair but more than I am prepared to pay.
