car cuts out

92 SE 5spd

My car drove fine this morning, starting without problems.

This evening, there was a rough start and then it cut out. Sounds like possible fuel pump or alternator. My battery reads 12 volts.

What tests can I run with my multimeter?

I appreciate any help!

just checked it...12.1 before start, 10.4 while attempting to start. hear a little rattle coming from the back.

i've had problems with stalling for a while. recently took a 400 mile trip. noticed one rough start with a gas smell, otherwise drove fine.

The engine will turn over but did not start this morning.

If my alternator were bad, would the battery still be charged at 12 volts?

If your alty was bad it would drain your battery until it just wouldn't turn over anymore..

You need to check for fuel and spark first...

well i disconnected the battery, then took the MAF and checked it out. put everything back and was able to start the car.

the alternator is fine...read 14v with the car running.

will see if it starts later tonight.

thanks for the input guys.

If the battery has enough volts, with your significant other or buddy holding the key in the start position, jump the connections on the starter. Use an old (or cheap) screwdriver with a well insulated handle. The motor should start. If you’ve never done this before, don’t be startled when the screwdriver feels like you can’t pull it off.

If the battery has plenty of volts (>13v) and you think the starter is still good, then check the battery connection terminals. If you’ve had heavy corrosion one or more times in the past but not now, the corrosion may have worked it’s way between the multi strand wire enough to hinder the voltage going to the starter. Check the starter wire as well as the primary positive wire.

But, you mentioned that your max stopped running. I’d change the fuel filter. This is a cheap step and worth doing anyway.

Had trouble starting the car again.

I haven't tried jumping the starter connections...not sure what you mean by that.

The positive terminal has a bit of corrosion on it but nothing terrible.

Also checked the resistance at the fuel pump harness and was okay. The harness connection itself looked almost melted. Is that normal?

I'll changed the fuel filter not too long ago, but I'll do it again. Last time, there was a bunch of crap in the old filter!

Thanks.
