I'll agree with you in stating that the Bose system sucks for longevity purposes. But something I've come to realize from many third generation Maximas is that the speakers fade away slowly, without your realizing it. You should hear the difference between my g/f's 92 SE Bose and my previous 91 SE's Bose. The sound from the back speakers is so forceful, loud, and clear on hers. On mine, it is not as crisp or clear. Both work, the deterioration factor is just slow and sometimes un noticeable.

After the speakers deteriorate to a point in sound quality, they lose their power and fade away, sometimes slowly and sometimes all at once.

As for installation, I have experience removing and replacing all the speakers. For access to the front door panel, see Craig's website: http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gte671n/mymax.html

For access to the rear speakers, see my FAQ page on my web site: http://members.csinet.net/tisch/maxima

I got my whole BOSE system refurbed (91 SE w/ factory CD) . It sounds great. Amps are the first to go, but there is a place here in Dallas that will fix them for about $100 per speaker w/warranty.

How is your factory CD player working? I just posted regarding them. The one in my g/f's 92 SE just spontaneously clicks and turns itself on. I put a CD in there and had one heck of a time getting it out. I ended up disconnecting it after that episode. What do you recommend? Is there another unit out there that can be purchased? I read that there is a place in TX that can fix the Sony unit for $75.

Speakers and CD player replacements

The SE has a DIN plug in the back of the receiver to connect a Sony single CD player. I used the plug to connect an old but excellent Sony CD changer. The plug has one pin to switch the Bose receiver automatically to Aux input when you turn the CD changer control box on.

Unfortunately it is difficult to find a CD changer for line input to a receiver, most CD changers have the low-sound quality FM system.

But...you can use any other CD receiver and plug the preamp output into the original Bose receiver via the DIN plug, if you can figure out the pinning.

Do not try to replace the Bose amps or the receiver alone. They work together. The signal is carried from the receiver to the amps with 2 wires plus ground (differential), which is not standard.

For speakers and other stuff, I highly recommend Crutchfield. They are a catalog distributor in NY. They have outstanding technical support and also provide kits to make it easy to install aftermarket electronics. I buy everything from them.

For speakers, the Bose on the Maxima SE are very good but they severly lack trebble. So I added 2 Infinity Kappa tweeters in the corner of the front doors (Where the mirrors are attached). They sound great!

Bose is the biggest rip off out there. They charge hundreds of dollars to have it as an option on new max's caddys and others. They are betta of just sticking to home ent.

Yeah, I already have 100% Bose equipment and was just wondering if the other Bose receivers are compatible. How did you hook in your treble speakers?

Factory Service Center

Bryan,

I had the same problem with CD. Having to listen to the same CD for weeks, if it will even stop clicking and play. They fixed that for about $80 or so. It is called Factory Service Center and it is in Dallas. They do all the factory work for the Nissan dealships in the metro area. The dealership marks up there work about 200% . But if you go straight to them you can get a good deal. This is what they basically charged me:

$95 for front amp and speaker rebuilt w/exchange

$90 for rear amp rebuilt w/exchange

$40 for rear speaker cone

Cones hardly ever go out, especially fronts. If you speaker is crackling, low, or out completely it's probably the amp.

They also fix the short in the head unit volume control for about $30 or so.

I dont know why everyone bags on Bose so much. I have been impressed with them so far. Sure, only 2 speakers work right now, and I replaced one of them, but they sound great. I get compliments all the time about how clear they are and how good they sound....with no back speakers (well, one works, but you can hardly hear it).

Im very happy with my Bose. Remember, not every car has the Bose option, so be happy you get the choice.

if the passenger front speaker went out accompanied with smoke, and the head unit didn't turn on after that, any ideas on what could be wrong? Thanks.

why would you pay that much for each speaker to be fixed, when you could buy a new pair of speakers that are 5 times better

I did not pay all of that I just got one speaker fixed, the CD, and the head unit that had a short and a blown fuse.

If you only need to fix one or two, it is a cheaper alternative to having to replace all four speakers and get a new head unit.

The BOSE system is very good (when working). I sure that something that is actually 5 times as good as a working BOSE system is much more expensive than that.

There is a fuse in the back of the the head unit.Coulb be the probe You can change this yourself. It takes about 10 minutes.

1. Take out the 4 screws that are in the faceplate (2 under the lip below the climate control, one by the ashtray, and one by the change tray).

2. Use a flat head screwdriver to pop it out.

3. Remove the (2-4) screws that hold the metal bracket in place.

4. Pull the head unit out and check the fuse that is in the back. Replace it if necessary. You should be able to get it from any auto parts store.

Tweeters for Bose system

Bryan:

I removed the door panels, took the Bose speaker module out. I drilled a hole in it and connected the high-pass filter of the tweeters to the Bose speaker wires. I sealed the hole. The I ran the wires all the way up the door to behind the plate that the tweeters are mounted on. The plate is black, triangular, and is on the inside of the door, just behind the mirros. It was pretty tricky. But it has worked extremely well since 1993. I never had any problems with any of the components except that I got rid of the Sony CD changer that came with the car. Its sound was terrible.

What did you expect?

The car isn't brand new...and hardly any stock system is capable of handling your "slamming sounds." I'm quite satisfied with mine.

well the bose system in my car is good but the speakers are total crap. i am planning on keeping my system but replacing the speakers and since it didn't come with a cd player i will be adding a cd changer in my trunk. all the bose speakers are blown (yep, all 4) and when there is bassy (sp?) music, the speakers rattle and vibrate which make the music sound like crap.

I checked it out... and it appears that it is the main bose fuse... when i swap it out with another 20 amp fuse, the headunit will turn on and music will play. However, you hear this nasty noise coming out of the right front speaker again (static type warble noise) and I turned the deck back off and pulled the fuse before it popped again or caused any other damage? Is this the prelude to a failing amp or something even though sound comes out of the speaker?

cool.. thanks for you help! i just wanted to make sure that it wasn't something else causing this, sending the speaker/amp out to repair/replace, only to have it keep doing that!

oh, one more question, can i grab a bose headunit from a 95+ or 97+ max and just plug it in? i'm asking because that way I can keep the bose speakers, keep it looking stock, but be able to have a cd player!

infiniti kappas are a good choice. I got infiniti kappa 4x6's up front and 6x9's in the back. They sound great and they're on sale right now at crutchfield.com. I also suggest you upgrading the head unit as well. I got an kenwood mp3 one and it brings out the full potential of these speakers.

I don't know about the compatiblity, but I have the factory CD. It is made by Sony, but it is a factory unit. (I am trying not to continually sound like a commercial, but) Factory Service Center may have one. Or try Ebay. I have alse seen a Sony changer that is compatible that is sold by Crutchfield Magazine.

It's interesting how the head unit is clarion and the cd player is sony! Also, I saw a pic of a 3rd gen with a 4th gen head unit in there... i wonder if the rest of the parts were changed to 4th gen ? Anyway, thanks for the info! I guess i'll need to do some research on the Sony changer at Crutchfield (unless you have it?)

I'll post the links tonight but, I found 2 places that rebuild Maxima Bose stereos. It ends up costing around $200-$300 total for the whole system (stereo, al speakers, etc) but they say they use the best parts and I have heard a few people say the results were pretty awesome. Anyways, it sounds worth it because, after all, it is Bose so it has to be at least okay.
