Hi guys, just wanted to get opinion on this. wadda ya think?

I'll get more pics when i get off work.

I did find water in the spark plug, got most out before openin it up. there is also oil still inside. it's a usdm motor, not sure if vi'ed or not. the junkyard guy got it out of the car at 57k.

thanks again...Mike

57k? Mine doesn't look that bad at 180k. Sorry man but you would be asking for trouble with that one.

That engine has not experienced normal oil changes.

Nope. When my 1st ve bit the dust, it looked just like that. Put a flathead screwdriver into one of the allen head bolts. Let me know how much sludge comes out Then decide if you really want to try to rescue this engine. In fact, if your source has more than one, I'd ask them to do exactly what you showed us here. Take a pic of the valve cover off and email it to you before you buy.

I guess if you could get the engine cheap enough (say $100 or $150 or something) it would be worth it to take apart, clean everything out really well and rebuild/replace the VTCs. You would still have less into it than a JDM engine of unknown miles.

Jeff, I can't scrape any sludge any where in the engine. I may have to save this engine as I will be out $400 if I ship it back + restock fees. I may just have to swap parts from old engine.

I was looking at one of your jdm swap pics and it looks like that but without the sludge around the bolts.

idk...here some more pics to see at least if anything...

Good pics. But you see the black allen head bolts next to the valve springs? Try and scoop out sludge from the head portion. But my opinion still stands though. Someone didn't change the oil very often at all.

Well if the rest of the engine looks okay (ie.. coolant jacket), then you might be able to save it. It will take time to do it right though. ie.. very gentle, patient process with AutoRX. Eventually it will clean up. But the deal is to try to get the tiny oil gallies that feed the tensioners/VTCs to clean out. What's varnished up in the valvetrain is also the same way inside these gallies.

K here's a pic of a coolant line, it also seems like the engine has been opened up bit as there are a bunch of orange engine sealant.

idk, I'll just keep on keepin on...

Man, those were some f'ed up times...

I looked at that thread and still want to thank Jeff, Sarin, MrGone and Keelan!

It sounds like you are already paid into the engine, as far is it's not really worth it to send back. I thought it was one at a local yard you were thinking about buying.

I suggest carefully cleaning the fawk out of everything. If it cleans up really well, it should still be able to give you several good years worth of service before you need to do anything extensive.

Everything kind of depends on your budget. You could do a lot to help yourself if you can afford to install new manifold studs, water pump, VTCs, chain tensioners, etc., while you have this engine out of the car. It seems like a lot of money and a headache now, but you will have a lot less to worry about in the future.

When I took apart my engine to do the VTC's it looked exactly like this one. My engine has 160K miles on it. Now these were city miles, but the oil was changed religiously every 3000 miles. I did run 20W50 or 10W40 in it and that may be the difference ( more multiwieght resins to gum up), but mine didn't look much different from a deposit point of view. However, I think the engine is 157k, not 57k.

I'm goin to have to look into this, I can't remeber what matt93se said to look for, but when he did a clients he looked at something that told him the engine had 122k or so on the motor.

Could there be a possible chance that the oil was left in there for a LONG time even tho it could be a low mile engine for it to look like that?
