Is this an alternator problem?

Today is my lucky day. After I got home tonight, my 94 maxima would not start. My car behaved strangely on the way: first, I noticed the air conditioner was on and off by itself and the AC control panel light was off; I heard noice from the radio; the engine ran weirdly sometimes; I heard noice from passenger side front once a while; the car would not start and the head light was dim. After I charged the battery, I can start the car, but not difference in voltage with and without engine running. I measured the voltage at the output on the alternator, the same.
It seems like that it is the alternator problem? what else could contribute to the above observation?

It is the voltage of the battery.
Doh

Working alternator or not, if the wiring is left as designed, that will always be the case.

What is the actual voltage measured with the engine running and headlight switched on - less than about 13.4V at idle could be a faulty alt - any engine rpm above that should have the alt output at around 14V+ and the battery only 0.1 or so lower if all the cabling and connections are in good condition.

The voltage is 12.X,and it kept dropping during engine running.

Are your brake and battery warning lamps on? That definatly has to do with the alternator.

Hmmm, thats weird. When you pull the hand brake, does the brake warning light come on at least? If not, your bulbs may be out then.

The alternator is bad. I bought one from advance auto part for 80 dollars and replace it tonight. Now the voltage at idle is 14.2 V, is this normal or too high?

Word of wisdom, keep your receipt unless Advance keeps you in their record. Not saying Advance alty's are crap, it's not uncommon that 6 out of 10 parts store alty's will go bad within the first year. Sometimes you luck out, sometimes you don't. Just curious, how do they have your alty listed as "remanufacturer" or "rebuild"
