Funky noise

My 90 max is making a wierd sound, kind of a low 'buzz' or vibrating 'whir'. I mentioned it with another post, but it only happens when starting and the funny thing is that the starter was just replaced and it fires up right away. Someone mentioned the bolts to the starter may be loose and I haven't been able to get under and check. Today, I had it briefly to have the fuel pump replaced and the mechanic noticed the sound, and thought it sounded like it was coming from the transmission, but wasn't sure what it could be. Does that make sense that something in the transmission would be causing this noise and only at starting, or could it be that the problem may be somewhere around the transmission, but since they didn't have time to put it up on the hoist, couldn't tell?

Puzzling....

I take it that after over 30 views, and no response, that the loose bolt that was suggested before must be it. Or is it that much of a mystery?

Input shaft bearings come to mind. I know they sometimes make more noise when the car is cold and idling. I can't see how they would make noise only when the starter is engaging, though. I think you're stuck with actually having to get under the car and listen for the source.
***Disclaimer: This act should only be achieved by trained, or prudent, individuals. The act of common sense must be exaggerated when crawling under a car as it is started. Practice extreme caution.***

Do you have a 5 speed???

If not, then a bad input shaft bearing is not the noise...

I have that problem maybe once a month, but my low whirling noise comes from the rear left of the car, where the stock clarion rear speaker amp is situated so i gathered that was it?

No, it's an automatic. I've got a friend who has a ramp that I can put the front end on to get a little better look.

It seems that it should be easy to pinpoint, but I haven't yet, and it doesn't seem to affect anything
