Climate Control LED

Well I have begun the task of switching my entire interior LED's to blue. It's going well so far, except for the climate control. I am stuck on this part. Has anyone done this before? I'm trying to find new LED's for it, but I can't find them anywhere. They're a wierd rectangular shape, so I can't use the 3mm ones I have been so far. I need a source for these LED's in blue. Heres some pics for help...I need 9 total for the swap.

what a bummer....so I guess theres no way to do this conversion. What about the 2 LEDs that light up the rest of the stuff? It looks like I'd have to use wide angle LEDs because regular ones won't put out enough light to do anything. Any ideas??

yes wide angle LEDs or difuser caps over them. I would go with red for the sliders and the push button lights. if it were the main illumination it would look funny having blue illumination on everythign but the climate control. Having red show up just for the little section that lights up will look good. all those LEDs do is show you what mode its in so only one lights up at a time.

I had red sliders and they looked cool. I think I sent them to MrGone.

I do AC conversions on my Supra, and I do it for other Supra owners as a service.

Just go onto eBay and type is "rectangular blue LED" or somewhere along that line. That's what I typed in a while back. It's direct replacements and I was able to find it in blue.

On a side note, ever since then I haven't used the rectangular ones. I've just completely replaced it with the 3mm's. It takes a little modification to the AC Unit's casing, but it's a lot easier working with one style of LEDs.

Here's some of my work.

I can't seem to make threads yet, so I'll ask it here. How do you remove the AC Unit in the Maxima's? I just bought a 93. The clock and the ac buttons weren't working when I bought it.

I searched and found out you have to resolder the connections in the clock. I did that and the clock now works. But I tried taking the AC Unit out and a whole ****load of lines are connected to it.

yeah best thing to do is take the radio out and drop the AC unit down so you can get to it. You can take the wire off by the connectors but be careful with the hard line. There is a way to take it off as well (one screw and its a clip that unclips). Once you drop it to the bottom where you can see a little better you should be fine.

There is a blue and black cable with a thick wire in it. The blue one is for the switch of weather or not you want air to pass through the heater, and the black one is for the temp slider. They have a little kink in them so to get them out you have to angle them in wierd ways, but it's not hard. I had a tough time getting it out the first time though. I had to take out the bezel surrounding the radio, the panel under the steering wheel, and the panel that the radio bezel connects too. The AC unit actually sits BEHIND the panel the radio bezel snaps into, and you can't get that out without removing the panel under the steering wheel, because it kind of hooks into it and won't pull out otherwise. Thats what I had to do and it came out really easy then. It was just a PITA to get all that other stuff out. But it's fine for me because I'm changing out all my lights anyways. If michael says that it can just drop down and be pulled out through the radio hole, then do that, but mine couldn't come out like that. Good luck though, you'll end up with a lot of little cuts on your hands for sure! lol

Michael, so you're saying that I should use LED's instead of those rectangle lights? I can't even imagine how to do that. I'll look on ebay again for those rectangle leds, but I couldn't find them. I did just buy some blue 286 bulbs from the UK though....because I couldn't find them anywhere! Autozone, pepboys, radio shack, advance auto parts......none had those LEDs. I've heard that people bought blue 194 bulbs from autozone, but they said they didn't carry any of those either! O well, it gave me a good reason to buy plug'n'play wide angle LED 194 bulbs, so they'll look good under the shifter and in the gauge cluster.

Also, do the turn signal lights use 286 bulbs?

I thought the turn signals were 194's also. Don't quote me - I'm just guessing.

no they're definetally smaller. I'm just too lazy to look right now. I don't feel like taking that all apart again.

Sylvania has a bulb replacement guide that tells you what bulbs are for what for almost every model.

And here's the link for the rectangular LEDs. I simply searched "blue rectangular led" so I don't know why you couldn't get it.

Also since I'm not allowed to make threads yet, I'll just ask in this thread.

My clock and by ac buttons wouldn't light up. I fixed the clock by resoldering the resistors because I guess the connection broke. I was told it'd fix the AC buttons too.

After fixing the clock, my AC buttons still aren't on. Are there like bulbs that burn out, or what do I need to do. I was told it was a common problem.

I'm just trying to fix all the minor problems in the Maxima I just bought.

HA! thanks michael for the tip, I don't know why I didn't just use 3mm LED's before. It did take some modification, and LOTS of soldering, but I did it in a few hours. It took so long because I started by taking out the switches, and ruined some of the connections on the circuit board by not being careful. Thats why in the pic I had to rig up some wiring myself. It was definetally a PITA, but now that I'm done it's totally worth it. It looks AWESOME at night.
