found feature on accident

who knew that theres a safety lock in the trunk of the car? i was moving a week ago and i accidentally triggered the safety lock (trunk was full of items) and had to take the back seat out to get back in to the trunk (the trunk unlock mechanism had no effect on the trunk with the safety lock down)!

heh; i also replaced the rear drivers side window motivator and motor. the replacement just broke somehow today when i was rolling it up. wtf. i know i bought the car for $2k and i love it, but this damn thing is nickel and diming me to death! at least the fixes are usually simple and work...most of the time.

Must be something that encourages the window to move. I'm sure he meant regulator.

That trunk safety switch just stops the trunk release button from working, it still opens if you use the MAIN key. The valet key won't open it. The trunk lock is there so you can drop the car off somewhere, and give the person you are leaving it with the valet key and then they can't get into the glove compartment or trunk with your key, and then if you use the trunk lock, they can't open the trunk with the release button.

my copied key works on the trunk and glove box

someone probably copied the valet key for your cars or they went to a bad locksmith.

That's probably because the person who made your copies did not get a perfect or close to perfect match. You should just take them back and have them regrind the copies so they are closer to the Master. You should be able to hold up the copies to the Master and see any differences that may be causing the difficulty.

the copied key shouldn't have trouble opening the door, but since it has trouble in the ign., it sounds like it's just a bad copy.

you should be able to as long as you show them proof of ownership.

You should be able to get some made using the VIN unless you know the key code to give them.

The key code tag comes with the car when it's new. The original owner is supposed to record the numbers and remove the tag from the keys. If you bought the car used you would be extremely lucky to find the code unless the previous owner(s) left it inside the car somewhere like the glovebox. The dealer should be able to find the key code using the VIN so you don't need to worry about finding it on your own.

Do you have pics of the location of the safety lock switch? Where exactly is it...

Pop your trunk and look under the lock mechanism on the body of the car[not the trunk lid] There will be a square hole with a little slider type lever inside the hole..The up position is normal, down is safety position...

I think?

sorry to inform you guys but you will be out of luck if you try to get a key cut with the VIN. They started keeping those records in late 94 I believe. Everyone I know that has tried (including me) to get a key cut with the vin has not been able to. So far I havent seen anyone come up with a key code either. I saw it mentioned and some people said it was in the glove box but no one has found it. It is probably in the sales pack you get when you buy the car but not many people keep that stuff.

I was lucky, when I took over the car the original owner still had the Master Key, the spare, the valet key, and the key code plate all on the same ring.

huh...did you read my post?

You can always get a key made by making a copy of an existing key but you just cant get a new one cut by the VIN.

If you go to a good lock smith and not walmart or a hardware store you will be able to get a good copy made even if your key is worn. Heck I had a locksmith make me a master key with a valet key. I locked my keys in the trunk of my old MR2 but luckily I had my valet key in my walet. Well that wouldnt open the trunk so I went to a locksmith and they knew exactly what the difference was and made a perfect key that worked the trunk, door and ignition.

Not sure if there are many quality locksmiths left though.

basicly i wanted to know if i could still get one from nissan, which i belive the answer is no.

the only decent locksmith (or real city) around here is about two hours drive from here so i was trying to avoid that if possible.

you can buy new blanks from them but thats about it. Most of the Nissan dealers I know of have a key cutter that goes by a code...without the code they can do nothing.

But like I said you can buy a nice blank key with the big black plastic that says Nissan on it and take it to a locksmith or any place that makes keys and have a copy made.

IIRC, the key code is stamped onto the ignition cylinder. It should also be stamped onto the door lock cylinders. I'm pretty sure it was on my 90 240SX so logic would dictate that it would be the same on our cars, since they're from the same era. But since when did logic mean anything?

Otherwise, if you have the original key ring from the dealer, it will have a little 5mm by 20mm tag affixed to it with the key code stamped onto it. I was lucky with my old 240 and had both original keys, the valet key, and the key code tag.

As far as the trunk safety lock goes, I found that a while ago by accident too. Of course, I was reading the manual when I happened upon it.

my dealer just cut mine on a generic blank
but it was by the code I gave them.
and they also told me that they can't go back farther than 94 from the VIN

yeah they want top dollar for those original style blanks. I got a couple for my old Altima I had and I think I paid like $5 or more for just the blank.

So where did you get the code then.

1. it was only $5 cut by the code
2. it was in the glovebox on a sticker, same as my current one is.
