front valve cover/head noise

ok, ive been thinking about this for a while

when my vtc's are quiet at idle, i hear this weird noise front the front valve cover

idk wtf it is, it shounds like its comming from the middle of the cover. i think it could be something with the chain guied in there, can i change that guied, by taking valve cover off and replace it??

should i take the valve cover off and look if anything is wrong??

if i take it off ill need a new gasket????

also, when the vtc's are ticking if you put ur hand on the valve cover, it feels like a hammer is hitting the hel out of the cover, even on the tranny end of the cover.

I have the same sound from mine every once in a while,it is not the vtc's either...The tapping comes from the middle of the front cover,it is very loud, but will quit like you turned a switch off...

I figure it is probably a lifter/lash adjuster..

If it comes from the middle of the upper timing chain cover it's probably the chain tensioner. If it's shot it allows the chain to flap around and possibly hit the cover.

is it time chain or belt? the time belt has a tensioner that recently had to be changed on my GXE we thought was the crankshaft pulley, also when I replaced it along with the belt, a mechanical noise started like if belt was missplaced, this took me month to not solve until I decided to run engine with noise till it brake and it didn't noise stopped after a couple of blocks of ridding it. more oil changes and inside engine cleaners have been performed, engine is running pretty quite.

good luck

Bringing back an older thread here...

I recently had this issue come up (LOUD tapping in the middle of the valve cover), but I notice a rather substantial power loss associated with it. The noise is intermittent. It happens immediately at startup and goes away just as quickly. The noise returns about 30 minutes in to my commute and is intermittent from there on. My first thought on the sound was a sticking hydraulic lash adjuster, but the big power loss too? Maybe I'm missing something or over/under thinking it. I guess I just need a little guidance.

if a lifter is sticking then you are basically running without that cylinder

That would explain the power loss...

Sometimes I just don't think things through before I ask. Thanks!
