tranny rebuild cost

Well i'm in the progress of swapping engines right now and I figure I got that out might as well get the tranny out and see what needs to be done. I found out I just need bearings, but got school coming up so I won't have time for that. I recently got a quote to rebuild the tranny for $500 and that is for everything except putting it back in the car. Is that a fair price?

Thanks guys let me know whatcha think.

I think i was qutoed 650 installed from the Devil, I mean cottman. DON"T GO THERE!

I think 500 for new bearings, seal, and a qaulity job is worth it.

$500 is cheap for a quality job if they are replacing all of the bearings and seals...

make sure you see the old parts they replace as well, otherwise you'll be charged $500 to replace one $55 bearing.

I believe I paid $300-350 for all the bearings, syncros, and shims. $150-$200 for the labor is a very good price.

couldn't have asked for better org members. I thought about cottman but wasn't able to call them for some reason, I know why now.

I will definitely ask for the old bearings to see what they look like after I beat the sheite out of the tranny. From what I was told everything else looked fine except for some of the bearings, he said they were a bit grind or w/e.

300-350 is an awesome price, not bad at all. From looking at your picture maxpower, you might need another rebuild....j/k .

I will be gettin it back late tomorrow, he said it was a 10-12 hour job, I think that sounds a bit much but who knows

Thanks again guys and have a GREAT one!

if you can remove an install and engine and tranny, i have no doubt you could fix the tranny yourself. that is if it's a 5 speed. sounds like you already dropped it off though.. good luck, man hopefuly they do a good job.

Yeah, but I got school comin in less than a week, I'm paying the price for doin it at the last second. This is my first time doin this and it took longer than what I had plan on. And I was told it would take them 10 or so hours to do, which will probably take me 3x as long. Engine is takin me long enough as it is. Just can't wait to get this over with.

If you bust your a** you can do it yourself in a couple of days. It'll save you quite a bit of money.

I did the entire job start to finish in under 8 hours.. that's from jacking up the car in the drive, pulling it out, rebuilding it, putting it back in, blah blah balh.

matt not all of use are bless like you to be able to rip your whole car apart and put it back together like nothing you have alot of experience with this car proly far more then most of use do but still atleast we try plus we all dont have all the tools needed to do the job easier then others like yourself who prolly have all the tools you would need to dismatle and reassemble your whole car if needed too

I wasn't trying to start an arguement... the job simply isn't THAT hard, but you do need to be competent when handling the business end of a wrench.. anybody that is even thinking about opening up their tranny had better know how to pull the thing off the car already..

that said, anyone that knows how should be able to pull the tranny off in a few hours (it takes me 45 min to get the tranny out)..

but the point is, the job isn't THAT bad. if you have the parts on hand and know what you're doing with the car, then you can do it in a day or a weekend if you take your time.

and the time I quoted above was the first time I'd ever opened the tranny. grabbed the FSM and followed it step by step through the rebuild process.
I was at a track event on thursday... drove home thurs night and rebuilt the tranny on friday.. sat morning I was back at the track for another two days of fun.

I would have to agree that is a reasonable price. I had a grand prix a few years back and the transmission was rebuilt on it when I had it. Cost $1,600. So yeah $500 is DAMN good.

my junk tranny (the only one i could find in all of indiana...so im crossing my fingers and hoping it holds up) cost me $550. Cost me about $250 to have it swapped in and had the fluid and filter changed. my old one went out because i burned up the 3rd gear band...because I never changed my fluid learned that $50 a year can save you a LOT of money, and most of all, a lot of hassle). i would have bought rebuilt, but i didnt have the money nor the time to wait for JDM to import one, etc. jasper engines needs to start remanufacturing Nissan trannies....

K, got the tranny back, ended up costing me $671. First reason was that the bearing kit I bought at drivetrain.com sent me the wrong kit. It was for an all wheel drive system. So I gotta return that and had the people buy it for me, cheaper. They charged me $479 for labor and $192 for parts and freight for ordering. I even got back the old bearings I told them to save, they weren't too bad at all. But for the piece of mind and 1yr warrenty/12,000 miles, it's worth it imo.

Thanks to all for your inputs, best orgers PERIOD!!!
