buying car in another state???

Planning to buy a car in another state from private seller(170 miles away).
Then I will drive to my state and register.

I believe I pay tax only where I register. Am I right?

Other than Title of the car what else I should get from seller. (Bill of sale is it must...)

Is there any thing I should know about this?

Thanks guys

Some states require a signed statement with a witness of mileage. You pay sales tax for where ever you're currently living (unless you are in the military)

i just got finished buying one out of state. you shouldn't have to pay another state's sales tax, at least I didn't. in fact, people from washington like to buy cars down here becase there is no sales tax. but i'm not sure if they can that anymore. anyway, just get your title and bill of sale. you'll have to pay for emmissions testing if applicable, registration, plates and title.

There's some people who do that here in South Dakota as well. They come up here for vacation, and they end up getting a PO Box or along that line. That way they only have to pay the 3% sales tax here.

Me, I like keeping my vehicles registered in TN. Costs me about $15 more a year for registration and sales tax is a PITA @ 9.5%, but I love only have 1 tag, instead of the gay 2 tags. Plus it's fun watching cops slam on their brakes to see the back of my truck, only to realize it's registered. they can't give me a ticket

wow, 9.5%. sometimes i take for granted the lack of a sales tax here. if the washington tags on the black max i just bought weren't expired, i probably wouldn't even bother switching the registration and plates until they did expire, the state is going to be getting enough from me already from the speeding ticket i got the other day it could be worse than your 2 tags though. in hawaii, they make you slap a big square sticker on your bumper.

call your state DMV and ask them. I purchased a car out of state 2 years ago and it was a good thing I had called first. In RI, I do not need a title if the car is 10 years or older. I did need it as proof of previous ownership coming from out of state. A 5 minute phone call might be worht your time.

Or TX where you end up with 2 or 3 stickers on your windsheild as well. The nice part is, @ 9.5% we don't pay Income Tax. Same thing here in South Dakota though, at their 3%, no one here pays Income Tax either. But they get you on property taxes.

My car was previously registered in New Mexico and I didn't have any problems with changing it over, I payed the tax for Washington State. Also I think it has alot to do with who you're talking to at the DMV. The first time I went in my bill of sale said $300 (bs of course) so that I could save some money like everyone does. She asked me what was wrong with the car because it was valued at $5000! which would have been like $500 in tax or something like that. I said that I bought the car with no motor or tranny in it and she says that I have to go get an estimate for repairs to get the deduction. So I thought f*** that. I came back the next day and had a different woman at the counter in the DMV and she didn't ask any questions and charged me $130. If they give you a hard time come back later and talk to someone else. It works...

In PA you need to have a notarized bill of sale and not necessarily a notarized signature on the title. I agree with Jon94SE, if you don't get the story you want the first time, go back and talk to someone else. Also the older the car, the easier time you have getting it registered in another state, they just stop caring about older cars, at least they do in PA.
