Install kit

Anyone know if the steering wheel installation kit for the 2nd gen Maxima will fit the 3rd gen? I recently acquired a Grant steering wheel, model 1434 and I need a kit to put it in, but grant does not offer an install kit for the 3rd gen. I guess if that don't work I'll just have to end up selling it. Here's what the steering wheel looks like.

I responded to PM, but thought I better post this part/update here. I called AutoZone for you and questioned why no kit for 3rd gen, especially given that I bought mine from them several years ago.
They DO have one: Part #W910. Now, this is pulled up for an '89 Maxima with or without cruise control. I disconnected and removed my cruise as I never used it, so I don't have on my car. Either way, I have no clue as to why it would be different between years unless you have an air bag. Otherwise, I say this is the kit to get. My local AutoZone has it in stock, stated it was $12.00 in stock. Happy installing!

Ok, here's another question. Anyone have a ballpark estimate on how long it may take to change the wheel? Trying to find out if I will have enough time to do it tonight.

Will take about 30 minutes, of course it's almost "tomorrow" at this point. Biggest problem for me was not doing anything but actually pulling the wheel off the grooved hub. Wiggling back and forth, up/down finally dislodged it. Good luck!

Thanks man. At this point I'm not going to attempt it. I have the install kit for an 89, but we ended up getting busy before I could snag a steering wheel puller. I remembered just when the alarm went off to let us know it was set. So I'll get it from work tomorrow and probably spend the time after work putting it on.

Thanks again Chris.

Ok, I attempted changing the steering wheel today. Didn't go so well. I took off the Cover (horn) and loosened the nut that holds the steering wheel on. Keep in mind I don't have an air bag system. I attached the steering wheel puller and started turning to pull it off. It won't come off though, all it done was start splitting the steering wheel. Is there anything else holding the steering wheel on that I am not seeing?

Well, again I attempted changing the steering wheel. No luck as usual. The foam of the wheel just wants to split and not budge off of the spline. I tried putting tension on it with a puller, then giving it a small tap with the hammer, hoping it would break loose. That was a no go too. So, a bloody cut up hand and a half split steering wheel later I'm giving up. I may sell the wheel with the install kit.

oh man dont give up. Take the puller and put pressure on it...pull it as much as you can safely without the bolts bending and then whack the puller with a hammer a couple of times and see if that doesnt break it loose.

I have never had that kind of trouble and last steering wheel I pulled off I just loosened the nut, pulled on it and whacked the center with a dead blow hammer (rubber weighted hammer...works great for that kind of stuff) and it came right off. I wouldnt recommend using a regular hammer or you can mess up the threads.

keep trying though because the GXE wheel is UGLY.

Well, after days of trying to get the old steering wheel off to replace it with the one shown above, I FINALLY got it on. I still need to do some adjusting, but other than that it looks good. They ALWAYS look straight until you actually drive after putting them on.

I'm gonna be swapping out my stock air-bag wheel for another, I have alot of tools, just not a steering wheel puller. Do I have to have it? Also, what are some things to make sure to do when putting the new one on? Like with the airbag & cruise control.

Thanks.

Yeah you have to have the steering wheel puller. Just make sure to screw the 2 bolts that hold the puller to the wheel ALL the way in, it separates the 2 bars behind the wheel so it will come off. It took me FOREVER to realize that. Once I did it came off with a small tug.

As for right now I don't have cruise control. I'm taking it away from the column and mounting it where the button for fog lights should be (since mine doesn't have fogs). Gonna require some fabrication, but shouldn't be as near of a pain in a** as this was at first.

As for the air bag, I don't know what to tell you except to just unhook it, just make sure to disconnect the battery and don't touch anything for at least 10 minutes. Just to be safe and not make the bag go off. Once you've waited just unplug the plugs that are all Yellow.

Hope this helps.

I have always just pulled the steering wheel off my cars. Ive had to pull them on and mx3, s10, 240sx, and soon the max. I just pulled really hard on the top and bottom of the wheel. Came right off in under 2 minuets including taking the screws out.

These one's won't come out quite so easy. What I didn't know is that there are 2 metal rods behind the foam of the wheel and they are around the spline. The two bolts that hold the puller onto the wheel spread them apart to release the tension on it. I'm use to my Ranger I had. All I had to do to it was put the two bolts in just tight enough for a good grip, nothing to spread apart on it. If you don't get them far enough in you will rip the foam backing of the wheel all the way around to the horn pad. I found that out first hand.
