steering pump

I replaced this recently because of a very gradual leak. apparently i let it go for too long and the rack seems to going as well - oh and the pass side boot on the rack is split too. my question is i picked up a pump from a yard and it had what looked and smelled like brake fluid to me. I thought the max took atf in the power steering system.

Nissan p/s systems do take dextron atf...You would be surprised at what some people put in their cars...

I was at idiotzone one time getting something[dont remember what] and looked over at some girl putting a bottle of transmission fluid in the crankcase of her car....

I was pretty impressed with this stopleak stuff I bought awhile back, I had a terrible leak, had to fill my PS up just about every other day and I used a bottle of that and it's almost back to normal now, if anyones looking for a temporary leak fix.

as i understand it, if your fluid levels are correct and you're still experiencing either 1) high steering effort or 2) noise while steering then you will most likely have a steering rack purchase in your future...

if you're thinking you're just gonna "deal" with the manual-steering-like-effort be aware that all the while your now faulty rack will be throwing a good bit of debris into your pump.

I just replaced the rack and hyd. lines because they leaked. There is no leaking now but the pump sounds like it needs fluid. I'll get around to changing it but what are the chances I have air traped in the system?
