91 max alarm goes off randomly help!!

Hello all I have a 91 max with 180,000 and climbing. How do I know if I have a VG or VE, and what are the differences? anywho the damn alarm on the thing goes off randomly all of the f-ing time and it dirves me crazy. It does it all of the time sometimes when I am standing there in front of it. When I say random I mean random. It may not do it for two weeks or it may do it 5 minutes after I lock the sob. wheather and atmosphere make no difference. Any ideas? I always have to take the fuze for the horn out when I go to bed and to school so it doesnt go off when I'm sleeping. I was thinking that one of the door jam switches or the trunk jam switch might have bad contacts, so that the alarm thinks that someone has opened the car and the alarm goes off. Is there a shock sensor or brain box that could be going bad. Any ideas would be great. I am pretty handy with a multimeter (enginnering student). Please let me know what is up.

sorry about the novel

I have similar problems that occurs randomly with my 94 GXE. While driving it OEM alarm yells in the car! I have a Viper alamr bypassing the original alarm. No recent screaminf from it since like 5 months ago . . . wondering if the case is similiar. No problem with the fuse on my side though!

I have no problems with fuses, I just take the horn fuse out so that it doesnt go off at night when everyone is sleeping (the alarm will, lights flash, but at least the horn does not blare). btw I'm all factory never have any trouble while the car is running

I've also had this problem with two of my cars, my nova used to do it all the time and my max had started to do it and then it stopped after awhile thank God. I don't know what could cause that problem probably something to do with the brain of the alarm on the fritz or something. Maybe some one else will chime in, I'd like to know more about this too though

You should pull the alarm module (should be to the left, under the steering wheel on US models, gold metal box I believe), take out the printed curcuit board, and check for loose/broken connections. This is a very common problem with the Nissan cold-soldered modules, they develop cracks in the solder over time. If it's not the module, then you'll have to start with checking the various pinswitches, followed by wiring harness. It's most likely the module itself though.

Overall it's not a critical issue I guess, I've talked with one of my buddies who owns a '92 and he had the same problem, brought it to Nissan ( unfortunatly ) and got it bypassed + new alarm system. Quite costy if you don't have an alternative alarm system already but it fixed the problem.

I would ring out your door/trunk switches with your multimeter. Use either the diode checker or use the x10000 scale to put some voltage across the switch while it is supposed to be open to check for a high resistance short.

how do I disable it? I'll check the "Gold Box"/alarm module to see what I can find I have trouble believeing that it would be one of the jam switches. I hope I can find something in the box.

not seeing it under driver side are you sure that its not under the passenger side on the side opposite of the central console? If I disco it will I loose the keypad lock functions or not. I once used a code off something on that side to reprogram the code for the key pad. Is that the box you are refering to? it has to be right?

What are the odds I will be able to find loose/ broken connections. you think that is realy what is wrong?

Odds are good... most people have problems with the various modules on the car over time: clock, auto climate control unit, daytime running lights, etc. very common, all caused by broken solder connections on the PCBs. You should probably resolder most connections (or at least the broken ones if there are any), and that should fix it. If you're not sure, get someone experienced with soldering to help you out. Or you may want to try another module from the wreckers if cheap enough, though odds are, most older modules would be in a similar state.

Cool thanks man. I have done some sodering, but I know it can be a real ***** to get it right some times. I'll let you guys know how it goes I'm thinking about looking at it this weekend along with the A/C control box/module job. Heat and no more random alarm would make my day.

The alarm on our 1992 doesn't ever seem to go off by itself, but on random occasions it will go off even when we use the key to open the door.

I wonder, if I disable the alarm, will this have any effect on the keypad?
