Maybe a pre-buying inspection WOULD have been a good idea... was just getting tired of spending $100 to find out I had a lemon on my hands.. but now my 1 week old max is having a multitude of problems: speedomoter dies out periodically, going to 0, strange knocking sound and feeling when I turn the wheel hard, rough sound sometimes when I accelerate etc. etc. I hope it doesn't just break down on me.. are Maximas generally reliable cars for 110,000 miles?

Check you speed sensor. The knocking sounds are probably your CV joints. Yes Maxima's are normally very reliable, most last well beyond 150K

CV Joints

HoJo is right about the CV Joints. If it knocks or clicks when turning sharp or turning fast then those need replacing. I have the same problem...

Also, check your fuel injectors and exhaust system for any faults.

Maximas are super dependable and reliable as long as they're maintained correctly.

Well..........

I don't know........My Max has 160,000 miles right now & is running pretty good for that many miles. Yeah i have had minor problems to my car but nothing major. But Maximas are awsome cause they last you a while.

Mine has 267,000 miles (yeah 267K miles) on it, and it is running just fine.

If the car has been maintained well it should last a good long time.

You can say that about any car

I got 104k on mine, it's been 20k since i got it last year, every repair I did was maintenance items, except for the tranny

My car is also suffering from clicking noises on sharp turns and rough sounds on acceleration. The CV joints are busted, so is my Catalytic Converter.. All I can say is that the 3rd gen Max is pretty reliable, as far as the engine is concerned, however it has it's flaws, like automatic tranny, exaust studs.... VTCs.... etc...

And TerribleTed, that is a lot of miles man! Congrats!
We have a bunch of you 200k + mile guys.... Hey, Where is the 360k+ mile dude?

yeah.. I am the second owner of this car, and I know the first owner. I wouldn't have purchased it without knowing that this guy did nothing but highway driving and had the car taken care of. Other than a tune up and a new seat it is just about perfect. and it still has the orig. clutch... I know that one is hard to believe... but this guy really did 99% of his driving on the highway.

I hate to say it but I told you. These cars are very reliable, but some moron decided to sell you a lemon. Don't blame the car blame the a$$ who sold it to you. 110k is nothing for a Maxima. Please take it somewhere who you can trust and let them check it and fix it before you get stuck. Personally, I would try to get my money back from the person you bought it from. Was it a dealer or private party??

i got my maxima last week. it needs a new right CV axle, rear pads, rotors and calipers, front pads, front tires, exhaust manifold stud(s) fixed on front manifold, possible valve job, syncro for 1st, speedo sensor/cable (speedo cuts out but odo keeps goin and it **seems** to be correct), new struts all around (i'm keepin the stock isht till i can afford tok's or koni or kyb), rear drivers window regulator, rear passengers window regulator (almost, not yet). i got taken for $4k but i'll live because the car is worth it to me.
oh yeah, did i mention it needs a VTC rewire? (which in combination with exhaust studs fixed could rule out the valve job). i think thats all.

$4k US?

Man... my car needs nothing and I got for $800, and had to put a $60 battery in it to take it home... After a tune up and a seat for less than $200 I can start putting speed parts on it and have a really great car for less than $2k.

Re: Re: $4k US?

the $800 car is a '91 Maxima SE with 267K miles on it, with broken drivers seat and low amps on the right side for the Bose stereo. has Everything a '91 SE can have but leather.

http://www.geocities.com/teschoen/Op..._Maximize.html

parts the car HAS to have to drive safely
New Drivers Seat $95 from Used Maxaima Parts.com

Parts the car needs to be a daily driver
Right Front Windwo Regulator

Parts the car needs to be almost new
Full Tune up including filters (It runs fine, but I always tune up a used car)
New tires
Wash/Polish/Wax paint

Parts to be better than new
Struts
FSTB
YPipe
Custom Intake

Magic bullet for GRM $2002 challenge
Nitrous System....

Can it be done? Sure with enough time and energy into searching for all the parts and doing all the labor myself.

Even without the Nitrous the car will be a decent $2002 car.

As to what the owner was thinking... he was a fair honest person. Believe it or not you can find deals and bargian down any price...

well seeing as it had 267K, i can see why it was $800, not to say that it isnt a good car or in perfect running order, but thats a fair price for the amount of miles it has on it. i thought you were going to say a 91 SE in pristine condition with 65K for $800, then i would say the previous owner was smoking barges full of crack when he sold it to you unless it was an "inside" deal like you knew him personally or something.
