could it be the VSS?

sup yea'll well i'm a maxima guy for awhile now i've own'd only 4th gens... and i got me a good deal on a 3rd its a 1990 maxima se 5spd leather, sunroof white gauges as a dailly driver i got it for 300 dollars runin and all, but the problem is that the speedmeter and odometer dont work, since the dash was crackd i got me a new dash board from a junkyard and replaced it still didnt solve the problem? so it has to be the VSS right? i'm just tryin to make sure cuz i really dont know all about these 3rd gens. and there common problems... well THanks in advace

the VSS is probably the cause, and it's fairly easily checked.
if you can see yours, check that the plastic plug in the top is still in tight before you go any farther, that has been known to be an issue

Your problem is exactly what I had - dead speedo and odo. Actually, mine came and went for about 8 months, and then died.

It was the speed sensor. Replaced it (5 minutes), and life was good.

As mentioned it sounds like the VSS. Wish I could be of more assistance, my 3rd gen has been relatively (not completely) trouble free for the past 10yrs. Since you're now a 3rd gen owner, if you're ever in the need for a FSM to look up something just drop me a line. We're in the same part of town and I'll be more than willing to help out.

My 91 starts out a 0 & as soon as the car starts to move it goes right to 35 MPH then when you stop at a light it drops down to 15 MPH as soon as you move it goes back to 35 MPH then when the car is turned off it goes back to 0 & it starts all over again. Then out of the blue it will work for about na hour or so. I replaced the VSS & this didnt help with mine. I got it aftermarket & they took it back.
