A week or so ago when navfe (blackwind) was at my house he said that my idle air control valve might be bad and he said the symptoms of a bad idle air control valve were very rough idle and bad low end driving that smoothes out at high rpms... well this is what i am expirencing and was wondering if it is something i could change myself or if it is even the idle air control valve.

you can take it off and clean it and see if that helps.

I am not sure about the VG one, but on the VE, it has some bends in it that don't allow it to be cleaned very well without removing it.

New gaskets sometimes are kind of hard to come by (for the VE, anyway) so be sure you have them in your hand before taking things apart.

The tend to get gunked up, along with the TB.

 

Correct me if im wrong, but dont you have to make your own gaskets for this...

No...Buy the needed gaskets at the dealer,they are cheap and you will be getting the right part...

 

Ok that is what i thought it was... but if i took it off and didnt replace the old gasket with a new one could that be the problem?

I would remove and clean the iacv with throttle body cleaner as metioned above[about $2 a can at the parts store] also clean the throttle body while you are at it..

 

Yup,not replacing the gasket could very well be you're problem...

You definetely need the gasket on the VG. You can get one at Schucks for few dollars.

Wait, I take this back. I was thinking of the thermostat housing gasket. The IAC gasket was a dealer item, although you could make one out of thicker gasket paper.

 

Your car is acting almost the way mine is. It just started giving me problems Saturday night, and my dad couldn't figure out what the problem was. We're going to check out the IACV now, and see if that'll fix my problem.

 

Would carb cleaner or brake cleaner work for cleaning the IAVC?

 

Brake cleaner is waaaay to harsh for the iacv..

And not carb cleaner either,throttle body cleaner

 

When we cleaned mine we used the throtle body/carb cleaner could it have messed it up? also didnt change the gasket

 

Yeah,i have seen that combo/spray at the parts store,it is safe enough to use on tb's,and will still clean a carburator..

 

Those of you who removed your IACV to clean, did you simply unbolt the thing, spray clean, new gasket on, and then put back and fire up?

I was looking at my Hayne's manual on removing this thing back in the summer, and recalled reading about a detailed process where the flap has to be in a certain position when re-installing etc. Is there a write-up? TIA.

your problem might also be a egr valve that is stuck open a bit. due to carbon buildup. remove clean and replace, an easy diy job.

 

which one is the egr valve? *puts on flame suit*

ok got it off and leting it soak in tb cleaner for a couple hours.
