I have a vg engine. All the sockets I can find in the store are 22mm, but the maxima has a 17 mm nut on the socket. Any clues where I can pick up a 17 mm socket.

Part 2. I am replacing the sensor. any harm ( is it easy) in just breaking off the outside cover (that shinny little tube that sticks out) and cutting the wires and using a regular 17 mm socket ?

 

get a 17mm closed end box wrench..cut the wire..sleeve the wrench over the sensor and pull/push.

 

don't even bother with getting fancy specialized socket at the store. just cut the wire and grab a deep 17mm (4in long) and racket will do it. make sure you disconnected your negative terminal first before you do this.

 

Get a 17mm Deep socket and cut a groove in the side of it.

 

try open end wrench.there's a special socket w/a slit in it to feed the wires that you can buy.

 

After 2 trips to the auto parts store and back looking for o2 sockets and something that might fit, or a deep enough socket to at least work... I ended up using one of these puppies!

that's the open/close end wrench that i speak of.

 

standard open end will just strip the O2 causing you even more pain.

a crows foot wrench is better..but if you're going to replace it anyway use the closed end of the combo wrench and push/pull as much as you can and it won't strip the O2 (assuming that you're working with decent wrenches).

 

I got a set of those ratcheting wrenches. They work wonders.

you can buy just one 17 mm, though:

Craftman 17mm ratcheting wrench

Harbor Freight might be cheaper.
