Crankshaft VG questions.

Looking at the pully side, I can see that the shaft is roughly wondering 1/8". So Isuppose my crankshaft is bent.

How much are they?

Is it worth chaning one on a motor with 200k miles?

Is it the pulley itself or the actual crank? I've found it's usually just the pulley that's got a bit of wobble in it.

but if the crank is actually bent, jsut buy a junkyard engine. it's cheaper than buying a new crank.

I was looking at the center of the bolt. It has a wobble. I sorts doubt the bolt is bent.

The bolt probably got loosen from under torque. Get an impact wrench, loosen that nut and check.

Also, chances are your pulley was bad so give Unorthodox a call to see if they got a clearance UDP replacement, the ones with a slight paint chip. I got mine for $90 4 years ago.

pull the bolt off and rotate the crank from the other end. see if it's the crank or the bolt.

all of my cars have had a slight wobble on that bolt for some reason or another.

Interesting. When I redo my belts soon I'll check it. OR when I do get a new pulley.

I would consider this approaching catostrophic failure. I'm surprised there are not some other signs that your crank is actually warped. Would there not be a noticeable oil leak? Premature wear of belts? Difficulty turning engine over and loss of power? I agree, make sure the crank pulley bolt is on tight. Worst case, you do need a crank, I have one in my garage.

I never changed a crank... I need to pull the motor?

I donno if it's really worth changing, vs a fresh motor. I don't drive it alot, maybe a 100 miles a week and it's been like this since I got it 100,000 miles ago. Only 2 sets of belts, that never needed changing. Runs good, lil rough because it might need plugs.

My question is: what would bend the crank shaft in the first place?

even if it really is tweaked, i'd just drive it till it breaks off. you can upgrade to an et after the engine goes.. I've also noticed wobble in mine although it seemed more like an optical illusion from markings on the snout than it did an actual wobble. didn't the snout issue get fixed for the 91+ vgs anyhow?

I read some where online that you can put in a turbo crank with some machining? The bonus is that they are forged. Anyone know?

I wasn't aware that the VG and VGT cranks were different. Installing a used crank into another engine would benifit from machining to make sure you had the right clearances.

After some further thought, you would have to remove cross member, drop engine down and remove oil pan, pull all front pulleys and timing belt, and drop tranny to pull flywheel in order to swap crank. Yeah, that does sound like a pain! Never mind. Well, I've got a good running complete VG engine too if you do need one. But, I agree....if there are no other signs, drive it till it breaks, especially if that is all the miles you put on the car.

Funny... the VG crank is good for 1000hp.

the problem is people put their belts on too damn tight.

I think i have read a few past threads about the snout breaking off on the vg crank, not sure why they did,but you are probably right as usual...

the snout breaks because people overtighten their belts. as the crank turns, it flexes on it right there over and over and over. If you know much about metallurgy, you'll be able to see that it's a fatigue failure. (I don't myself, but I sent a broken one from a customer car to a friend that works in materials testing industry..)

Everything that I have read says that VG30E and VG30ET use the same crank and, yes, it is forged. I have read that a VG bottom end can withstand 25+ pounds of boost and around 700hp.

I am with Matt on the stess fatigue/belt tightening idea. Most people just install new timing belts and accessory belts and crank down on them (bad idea). Always check correct tension and torque settings when doing any engine work. For timing belts use the correct feeler guage on the tensioner.
