Speed sensor on top of the tranny, near the oil filter(drivers side), it has a bolt, 10mm.

Loosen the bolt and check the wire connections. If that one is not it, then there is almost one identical to is directly under it, nearest to the drivers side drive axel.

What happens is this; the press fitted top loosens and wiggles out so the spinning gear does not make connection with the electrical parts inside and wholla... no speedo.

Both of them used to loosen out about every 6 months, I just politely tapped them back into place with a rubber mallet.

5spd has two, I included two in my descript, not knowing about the auto having two or not.

Either way my 15 years of MAXIMA experience, and 10years or MAXIMA.ORG ecperience always has room for improvement.

Mental note: auto tranny has one sensor

Cool! They slip out over time, even though the metal part is bolted on, the plastic comes out.

Seems like one could make a l type bracket to hold it in permantely.

I think courtesy NISSAN wanted $100 for the top one, and about the same for the bottom one(5spd).

There is one on the bottom of the tranny that is a 5speed, and easily overlooked. It will make the tach go Crazy, and disable the speed sensor.

When I called Courtesy NISSAN several years ago, they kept telling me that there was only one. I insisted that there was one underneanth, so the manager got on the phone and he spent an hour with me looking through the parts diagrams. He finally found it, and sure enough it was speedo related. The part was so rare that it had to be ordered from Japan, and Courtesy did not even know how much to charge me for it untill they got a quote on it.

Needless to say that small part that looks like the top one, only smaller, plugs into the transmission and affects speedo somehow.

What is the part called? You got me.

I'm not trying to be right here, just trying to share the right info.

The part you are referring to is called the neutral position switch...It has nothing to do with the speedometer..

Well; when I replaced it the entire tach / speedo combo came back to life, so what does it do Professor? Thanks for the Diagram BTW, I needed it for reference.

It is a multi-function switch...
The switch controls the backup lights on a 5 speed,on a automatic it also prevents the car from starting in any of the drive gears...

The only problems i have heard of on here from a faulty neutral position switch is it sometimes will blow fuel pump fuse when you attempt to put the car in 1st or 2nd gear. This is on the manual transmissions...

IIRC,org member "Hectic" had this issue with his car...

Strange, it threw my whole speedo out of whack.

Whatever the issue, I don't have the car any more, but it is good for reference. I am looking for a 92-94 SE 5spd.
