installing clutch for 5speed swap
I finally got the auto trans off and about to put on the flywheel.
I came across a slight problem or if it is a problem. I ordered a new clutch kit, it came with the clutch, flexplate, alignment too and a small metal cyclinder(looks like a spacer).
My question is, does that metal spacer has a role to play with the installation? Is so, how? I plan on finishing the swap tomorrow and a full detailed write up to come. Thanks for your input guys.

Pretty sure it's just a spacer possibly for a VQ.
It's not the pilot bearing. Just a spacer.

The kit that I had says 89 to 99. I'm quess it's to adapt it to a vq.
YOU DON'T NEED IT. SIMPLY BECAUSE IT DOESN'T FIT ANY WHERE.

Should be a pilot bushing and you need it in there for the alignment of the clutch (fits over that black tool pictured above). There is likely a metal ring sitting in the crank that needs to be pulled out for you to slide it in. Should look like this:

mtcookson-the metal piece that you have in the pic is not on my crankshaft. the pilot bushing that I have is a bit too wide to fit into the crankshaft. there is nothing sticking out like that.
Therealgoon9 - Damn for real , I admit it. that damn thing had me screwed up for a sec. Does it have any value in the trans/installation at all?

one more thing I just remembered, on the torque converted there is a ring that looks like the pilot bushing, but it is welded on to the converter. I'm thinking I should cut off the ring on the converter and use it in the intall.

That's weird... but it will make it easier anyways. The pilot bushing should just fit right into the crank itself. It will be snug but will go in there. Be sure to have the flywheel off and such and try tapping it in there. Unless by some chance there is already one there it'll go in.

Yeah tell me about it. The pilot bushing is exactly the same size as the opening in the crankshaft, no room to even hammer it in. I will have to break out my trust Dremel cutting wheel. I'll let you guys know what happens tomorrow.

Update: The swap is done.......well...99% done.
I have some issues.
1. I get vibration when its in gear(clutch pedal out)
2. It takes a little bit of work to get it into first sometimes.
3. My speedo does work at all.
4. There is a transmission oil leaking from both sides of the trans where the axels go into. this I know how to fix the other issues I need help in.
Damn!! when I started the car I noticed alot of vibrations. WTF.

I bought it from a max.org member. when you mean bearings..do you mean the bearings on the wheel hub? the flywheel isn't new, but I got it resurfaced. The seals are new from nissan. could the axels(from the auto) be too short for the 5speed trans?
mygreenmax94- did come across problems with the speedometer when you did your swap? I rewired the harnesses, the car starts, I have reverse lights is ther someting I'm missing?

what oil should I use for the gear box. I did a search and came across some posts where using 20w-50 engine oil is best for the gear box. others say use gear oil. what do I use for the best performance of the trans. is there a difference in the axles from a 92 gxe auto and 1991 5speed trans?

Auto = no pilot bushing
Manual = pilot bushing to help align the clutch disc. It's needed.
It's a press fit into the crank shaft as noted above. I think the auto had some weird thing pressed into the crank that needed to be pulled out.
I remember having to do this on Cliff Clavin's auto VE30DE JDM motor swap (that came auto) Had to pry out that funky bushing.

thats funny, when I took off the torque converter I did notice a bushing on the end of the converter. I'm going to cut off that bushing from the torque converter and use it to aligne the clutch. The bushing that came with the clutch is a bit bigger.
that must explain why I'm getting vibration when I drive, right?

That bushing should go right in with some tapping. If it seems too big, there must be something in the end of the crank still that is keeping the pilot bushing from going in, like in the picture above. That must be removed before putting the pilot bushing in, otherwise it simply won't go in.
Either way though, the clutch alignment is simply to get the input shaft to slide in smoothly and get the tranny bolted up. If you have the tranny bolted up already its aligned.

The trans is bolted up already. so that means the vibration that I'm getting from the car maybe due to the wrongs axles <--- I'll explain.
Last year I bought a set of axles for the car over the internet when it was an auto. when I recieved them the invoice said they were for an Altima the same year of my max. I sent an email to the company and they told me that the axles for the altima would fit my max without any problems, they did fit.
What I'm guessing is that axles for the altima would not fit a 91 vg 5speed trans. This is probably why I'm getting a fluid leak with a grinding noise and feeling. what do you fellas think?
P.s. I'm trying to get all the kinks out so that I can doa full detailed write up

i already got the 5 speed axles. I'm gonna get them put on monday coming. (keeping my fingers crossed)
MyGreenMax94 - do you recall if how many harnesses are supposed to be connected after the swap.
I did the rewire so the car can start and the reverse lights. and for the cruise control. am I missing anything?
