There is a guy near me that will make me a catback exhaust for cheap (straight-pipe). In Michigan there are no emissions laws (FTW). What muffler would be a good pairing with this? I want some growl, but still have a quietish idle.

Bro, iff yu wan ah growl get ah wile lion, tame am an u gat ah quietish idle! Awrite...neva min dat check this out...There are a million of aftermarket mufflers...dem gat claimed gains, claimed being the operative word and they are those that are supported with extensive spec sheets/stats dyno tests etc.. I aint noe who is wha or wha is who..but..again chek dis out

http://www.nissannews.com/site_libra...ima/tech.shtml paragraph 9

2000 Max
The adoption of a new variable capacity muffler system improves both engine horsepower at middle and high speeds by reducing exhaust pressure and reducing exhaust noise at low speeds. The system uses a valve which opens and closes according to exhaust pressure inside the muffler, switching the flow of exhaust gases from one tailpipe to two.

Is this be applicable to our cars????? I'm not an engineer so I cant provide conclusive evidence, however my OPINION is..YES we should benefit from it...

Personally, I would fuget bout growls , purrs dah bling look and go for performance.

Our motors need a bit of back pressure, Brian. Besides, a true straight-thru is just way to molester for my taste...I try to keep the Max understated and classy.

Its not backpressure its velocity. All backpressure is bad. But to keep velocity up the exhaust needs to have a smaller diameter exhaust and that comes unwanted backpressure.

My favorite mufflers are dual tipped ones similar to stock.
