Clutch fluid leaking?

My clutch fluid reservoir goes empty every week and a half or so. I fill it up to the max line (with DOT 3 of course) and 10 days later or so it's all gone. I don't see any leakage from under the hood, would it be back behind the firewall? Has anyone else had a problem with disappearing clutch fluid? What do I do?

When I did it was my slave cylinder, otherwise pull back the carpet and check

Put a piece of cardboard under the d-side of the engine bay overnight, this will help you trace the area of the leak...

If it's clutch fluid that is leaking then it will be simple to diagnose.
The leaky culprit is:
1. The master cylinder
2. Slave cylinder
3. clutch line
Remove the battery and the tray it sits on to check out the slave cylinder. That's what I'll put my money on...

It's probably the slave or master. I had a slave go out on my first Max. It will get progressively worse if you don't fix it. Mine was barely driveable when I finally fixed it.

My 240sx's master cylinder leaks into the interior of the car. It also has a nice annoying squeak if Im not listening to the radio (rare). My left foot is usually slippery and the carpet wet with clutch fluid every once in a while. But yea its one of the 3 things, the clutch system is very simple.

Yeah, I used to loose fluid a lot slower than I do now. The master cylinder looks fine from under the hood and there is no clutch fluid leaking into the interior. I'll definetely check out the slave cylinder, what should I look for exactly?

Dont buy an autozone um...hydralic parts. or Alts/starters etc. They fail either quicky or every time they are replaced.

Just get one from the dealer. Isn't that much more expensive and you wont have to redo it 10 times.

My slave cyl from advance is holding up after a whole summers worth of track evens (I wont say the D word when greenies around :P) and subzero winter temps in chicago and its doing fine.

But next time it blows Im buying from the dealer if it blows before its a year old.

It's a bit of a PITA to calculate shipping. Just keep going thru the ordering process and you will get a shipping figure before you have to enter any payment info.

If the fluid isn't showing up on the carpet and it doesn't show up on the ground under the car, the slave cylinder is probably leaking into the clutch housing.

I'm thinking that that is probably what is happening then, because I don't see any fluid anywhere (without digging around), it just disappears. Either that, or it's just such a small amount of fluid that I don't see it leaking.

My slave cylinder constantly eats s***. I have to replace it once every 3 months or so. Thing about auto zone hydraulic components is they wear out very quickly but..I have a lifetime warranty on it so everytime it goes bad I just go back and get a new one. It's a bit of a PITA but oh well. I'll eventually go and get a good one that will last though so I don't have to constantly change it out. Edit: by the way alex, that's probably not too good having that brake fluid leaking on the inside, that's pretty corrosive stuff.

Its actually not doing any thing, I keep checking it, but I'm definitely cleaning the carpet when I change the MC.

I see two autozone slave cylinders that have lifetime warranties, one brand is Brakeware and one brand is Luk. Which do you have, and would the other one possibly be more reliable?

I also see a slave cylinder kit that they have, is this like a rebuild kit maybe? Would it be worth getting maybe instead of the whole slave cylinder?

Pretty much everthing autozone carries is garbage...

You guys that keep getting these idiotzone remans would probably have better luck pulling a used oem slave cylinder from a junkyard car..

This was before Autozone carried LuK. I was also told by the tranny shop it was a high quality clutch and would handle the 300hp I was looking at doing with it.
there were many others things that shop flat out lied to me about, and I'll never be going back there again.

OK, I figured it out, it was the master cylinder after all, I have clutch fluid leaking down the clutch pedal, but I didn't notice it until today, thanks all!

Man, I got jinxed by this thread, right after that post my autozone crap cylinder went out again haha. So I went up and got another one for free. And you're probably right about the junkyard theory greenmax, not a bad idea.
