Speaker brackets (pods) to replace Bose up front
I've seen lots of posts on this before, but only for gxe's. I have a 92 SE with bose up front and wanted to replace them with 6.5" speakers. I found these
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Front...mZ330089670884
on ebay and was wondering if they'd fit. I'm assuming they would becuase the picture of the speaker on ebay is a 4" (like my bose up front). But I just wanted to make sure.
Also, anyone know how deep of a speaker I could put in there.

What I and some others have done, and would recommend, is get some 3/4" or 1/2" MDF, and make your own cutouts. That way, you could also also put in some 6.5" up front to replace the 4" which would add some midbass. Really easy to do, just use the current bose brackets as templates.

Thats who I was trying to remember - but couldn't as I was going to point the OP to get a pair of those!
I can't wait to get mine installed once I get my car back from the shop (deer suck)

to James' mounts. you can make them yourself though. Made some for my 4th Gen along w my dad's help ( he's a woodworker) It's pretty easy actually. worst part will be drilling the 4 holes for the screws. On my 4th gen went with 1/2" mdf all around...didn't thin it down as James does on his. I haven't added any sound deadening yet and there's next to no vibration unless i really crank it. In other words..if you make your own i highly recommend using the 1/2" mdf all around.

Thanks for all the advice, I'll probably go with those speaker pods on ebay then!

I made my own too and it's really not that hard. Of course, a small scroll saw and a drill makes things go much faster.
If I were to do it again though, I would put lot more work to tilt the speakers up and towards the back of the car, even if it's a few degrees. I installed separate tweeters on top of doors, which really helped, but the mid-range sound still doesn't sound that great.
If I put my head down, the stereo really sounds awesome, but I can't drive like that.....

I bought those from ebay and they fit perfectly, I installed this weekend some Components 6.5" on my doors and I'm very pleased. They are not 100% high quality but they do the job and if you don't have the time to make your own then this are perfect for any of you that want to upgrade from stock Bose 4x6 to 6.5"

All right! sorry for the innacurate information, my confusion comes due the previous owner put some aftermarket 4x6 on my 90SE which originally came with Bose, or at least that's what the grills say because I never had the stock Bose from this car.
Anyways, my point was to share that those ebay brackets/pods are ok if you wanna install some 6.5"

So anyone wanna sell me some pods that are tilted a bit? for some 6.5s?

Mount the tweeters higher and the sub will take care of the bass.
Many 6.5" speakers that aren't seperate will have the tweeter angled or adjustable.
I have my speakers crossed over so there is no low end coming from the door speakers -- only mids and highs.

Just buy seperates and a sub.

If you run direct power (either from the HU or an amp) to a speaker (like a coaxial 6.5 or a coaxial 6x9) all levels of sound are sent to that speaker.
You can buy an active crossover like this or passive (inline) crossovers can be installed.
The active crossovers can be kind of spendy, unless you get an older one, but they work well. I haven't looked for passive ones. Back in the day, I had some, but I don't even know if they are still available.
Personally, unless my amp came with built in crossovers, I would just wait and buy seperates and not buy a stand-alone cross over unit like the one I linked.

Exactly what I did with my car.
All you need is a hole saw and a power drill, and perhaps a sheet of sandpaper:
Of course, make sure the hole saw you buy is slightly smaller than the actual tweeter diameter, and then sand the rest until the tweeter fits snuggly. Extremely simply process and the result is very professional looking.
btw I'm selling James' speaker brackets along with the rest of my audio gear in the thread in my sig, so please buy it. You know you want to.

That's what I used to make the tweeter hole also.
Some details I rememeber. I drew the circle for the hole saw onto the door panel with a pen. Then I cut the top layer vinyl on the the door panel with an exacto knife first. Once that was done, I went ahead and drilled through the door panel.

thanks guys, so what kind of tweeters do you have or would you recommend? yes I know there's an audio section but I figured I'd ask while we're on speaker topic
I noticed recently when I had everything out the car that my head unit 6 RCA connections in the back, one for Low (subs) med, and high (tweeters) is that where they just plug in through the RCA like the woofer is?

If your going to go the hole saw route, cut the 'leather' part in an x first, push it out of the way then cut the hole with the hole saw. You'll end up with a cleaner edge where the tweeter meets the door. Hard to explain without a picture methinks

Is that what tweeters normally go for? $265 is kind of out of my price range! or am I lookin at the wrong ones?
Well since Brian says its Amp powered, what is a better option? Taping into speakers and use bass blocker or have another amp? I think the head unit allows you to control and configur the sound though cuz it does for the woofer...
