Twin Exhaust 3rd Gen

Hey Guys,

I'm going to be upgrading my exhaust sometime soon and from what i have read on the org and on the internet, they way to go is with a warpspeed Y pipe and replace the stock exhaust, hi flow cat etc...

My mate wants to put a twin exhaust system on my max though, remove the y pipe completely and run an exhaust direct from each header to the rear of the car.

My question is..

Has anyone ever done this and would be be benificial to the cars overall performance, or would i be better off with the warpspeed upgrade?

Cheers guys

The easiest and most economical way by far would be a WSP y-pipe

While yes, it is possibly you could get more power keeping them seperate (well actually using an x-pipe design) it's far more difficult, requires more material and in the end if you even notice a difference, it wouldn't be worth the headache.

Thats what i was thinking, ive heard nothing but the highest praise for the WS y pipe

Now, I'm very interested in knowing if anyone on the org has done this, or knows anyone who has done the dual exhaust setup.

jdwyer did back in 2002ish, but it wasn't a true dual setup, it split from one pipe into two near the rear suspension or something along those lines.

I belive it was a PITA because of how far down the spare tire well sticks outs on the bottom. Correct me if I am wrong...

I don't know of a single transversely mounted motor that came with true duals from the factory.

IIRC, someone put a 350z or G35 muffler-back dual exhaust (not a true dual exhaust) on their 3rd gen, but they had to cut the spare tire well.

Was that jdwyer? I remember seeing the pics, but can't remember the name. This ain't my thread, so I am not going to search.

The way my mate wants to do the dual exhaust is basically a pipe from each header to the rear of the car. Would the Wheel well still be in the way for this kind of setup?

that would be true dual exhaust but I dont think it is feasible to do on the Maxima. First the tubing would be unequal, second you would have to go with a small size to make it fit which isnt a big deal since the factory maxima pipe is very small and its just a single, third you would have to make two flex sections (one for each pipe) and that allows more chances for leaks, fourth you would need two catalytic converters, fifth you would need two mufflers and there just isnt a lot of room for that.

With all that said I would love for you to do it. I think it would be neat and might sound pretty cool. You probably would not gain any performance though but you never know.

they told me I couldnt run true dual exhaust on my old Camaro (84) race car but I did it...although the floor pan under the rear seats were cut out for the ladder bars and that is where I put the mufflers I was still able to fit dual 3" exhaust on it.

I think therealgoon has twin exhaust, but he's done quite a bit of body work.

personaly id stay away from putting dual exhaust on a max. all it will do is add more weight thats not needed. i see alot of civics and other ricers puttin dual exhaust on their cars and i just dont understand it. a civic doesnt have the torque to move around in its stock forum much less addin extra useless weight onto the exhaust. our cars have the torque and good power but its still useless. i doubt there would be any gain from doing so. if you did gain an extra 5 hp you wouldnt know because of the added weight.

+1 Dual tip is good enough. A g35 like sound is plenty yummy to not warrent a true dual setup.

Id put more effort into designing headers that will gain power. It would be hard since the stock manifolds flow well but headers should also help the car sound better.
