CV Boots and Axles

Hello! I have no experience at this mechanic part of the Max, The CV Boots are pretty bad, driver side completely torn in two with lots of cracks on it, passenger side a few cracks on it. Mechanic said I need to replace both axles due I've been driving like this for months now, replacing just the boots will be a waste of money, besides I have an oil leak and it's very dirty down there, Mechanic told me OEM axles will be around $200 per side, remanufactured axles it's $75, plus $30 for the boots, labor $150, what do you guys think? it's really necesary replace the axles as he said? what about the quote he give to me, I think it's a good deal, Midas or some place like that will charge more than 1K. All input will be appreciate it. Thank you.

If the passenger side just has cracks, and hasn't leaked any grease then just its boots can be replaced. But he might charge a similar amount of labor to put on new boots as it would just to buy a new axle and put it in. The drivers side has to be replaced since the boot is torn and you've been driving on it.

If you buy new axles you wont need new boots. Just get some axles from any where but the dealer. Try www.internetautosupply.com

For labor $150 isnt bad at all.

Yes, they are in need of replacement, if there is no grease (Leaked out from Boot Cracking/ Splitting) to operate the axle they will quickly fail soon there after. I would not buy retail through a dealer or local mechanic shop. I'm going to buy mine through "internetautomar" (Maxima.org User)/Internet Auto Supply. For Me... LSD, ABS, Auto It's going to be $55 For the drivers side and $75 For Passenger.

edit: Alex beat me to it apparently

I think he's trying to **** you. reman axles or any replacement axle, should come with CV boots already on them.
of course you could have heard him wrong and it was 200 for a new axle, 75 for a reman OR 30 for just the boots and labor is $150 any way you go.

180 for both axles shipped from interauto. then do it yourself or pay someone to. which is usually about 150$ for labor so 320 compared to?

Ok! Thanks! I guess I'll be doing both axles to have peace of mind, I Just check the prices and they are great, if you trust that site (www.internetautosupply.com) I'll buy from them, just to be sure: they come with the CV boots right? I mean both axles, because one says complete driver side, and the other just passenger side...

Ok, since I'm into repairs this week (already order the CV axles and finally the WSP Y-pipe) and I don't want to start a new thread for a simple question I'll ask here about two things.
I want to replace my fuel filter but I would like to know which one do you use/think is the best for the Maxima?
I have an oil leak which I haven't tried to seal, I'm looking for the Lucas Gasket sealer, (mechanic told me to buy one to pour in) but I couldn't find it at pepboys, I ask a guy there but he give me oil stabilizer, I think he didn't understand what I was looking for, I tried Autozone with no luck either, anyone know where can I buy this Lucas engine sealer online or anywhere else, Thanks.

i've changed my old Nissan CV boots with a new one ordered from a trustworthy dealer which has been perfectly fit, it didn't give any trouble, it keeps protects both the inner and outer portions of the CV joint and keeps away water, pebbles. i did the job by myself and save big money.

Sorry to bring this thread back around, but I am getting ready to do my axles too, and I was wondering how to tell if you have LSD and ABS?

My Maxima is a 1991 SE. Can you tell from the VIN or the engine bay plate?

Thank you for the help.

91 did not have LSD
ABS is easily seen when you open the hood and look on the passenger side front. if you see a largish box with tubes coming out of it you have ABS

Thank you for the information. I will check that (ABS) tonight, and then order some axles.

If you have limited slip, does the right side shaft matter if it is slip or not?

4DSC.com recommends draining auto tranny fluid before changing cv axles. but repair manuals and the raxles.com installation instructions do not mention the draining of the fluid. is it necessary?

also, internetautomart do u sell axle seals for the tranny?

thanks

you WILL be draining your trans fluid one way or the other, when you pull the axle out the fluid comes out from there, hence the need for a seal.
I do sell the seals, I just never cataloged them for some reason
