All The Sudden No Reverse???

all the sudden no reverse..fluid is perfect and bright red..trans was service about 4k ago before we bought it....car also just started shifting late all the sudden.. no warning.. my first thought is a new filter as who ever did the trans service just did a drain and fill. isn't the filter on top of trans in the black pan? under the battery/intake hose area?

Welcome to the GXE Autotragic club

Sounds like early stages of your transmission going out.

is it not true that a fluid and filter change on a poorly maintained tranny will accelerate its death?

semi truth to that....

if your tranny is hanging on due to the crap in the fluid then it's on it's way out anyway. changing the fluid probably shortened it for a few months...but don't think it's like 50K or something crazy.

In most auto trans, over time a varnish starts to build up on the parts if the fluid isn't changed regularly. Then if you do change the fluid, the varnish (which is helping hold the worn out parts together) starts to get cleaned off the parts and the trans just falls apart. The trans was already going out, you just didn't know it.

i actually need mine to die (i can explain..) so maybe I should get a fluid flush and filter change and hope for the best/worst. It seems my RPM is a little higher than usual but maybe I'm driving a couple MPH higher than usual too, dunno. but if the RPM is genuinely higher then maybe mine's on the edge and the fluid/filter will do the trick for me, so I can finally swap in a 5spd without anyone telling me I'm an idiot and/or making my life difficult.

before/after RPM videos found here: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=517439 posts #s 18, 20, and 21
I drove the same stretch of road 4 months separated.

DEFINATELY.... thats why my 2X rebuilt tranny ...is running on black fluid and im not changing it. as directed by my nieghbor who did it both times.....(at first i was like why wouldnt i want to change my damn fluid but now it makes perfect sense) ......yahh...its.......rough...but.....mildy strong.... all i could as for is one more season.

and BTW, my first rebuild was the same condition....no reverse....it would move an inch for 4,000 rpm of effort, 2nd some bearings were shot,

so +5 your tranny is shot....

Pheonix Remanufactured Transmissions sells rebuilt trans for about $1200 shipped. It even comes with a dyno sheet and a one year warranty. Then you send the old one back to them. If you can do the swap, that is the best deal around. If you are not able to swap out a trans, most shops will do it for about $1800.

how much should a shop charge just to take a transmission out and put another one in if perchance the owner has the replacement in the bed of his buddy's pickup and ready to go? Or even to just remove one and give you back the car?

i know i had the same issue....jsut wouldnt back up outanowere...and the worst part about it.....not that it was going to need a rebuild...but....since it didnt back up we had put the car at the end of the driveway closest to the street(by the mailbox) and...one nite my stepdad...backed up into the damn thing......!!! with a TAHOE! !!!... it would ve beeen totalled....but hes an autobody mechanic....so we got used parts..and free labor.......etc.....what a nightmare....
you can find.....that rebilding it can be anywhere from 800-2000 $$, Feel lucky if you can find a decent shop asking under 1,200, and IMO you could find that. i am very fortunate knowing my neighbor who did em......$640 first time, 2nd time (bushings) rebuild he did it for $800.
