Yeah but for $110.00 more you could have a CAI.Which would give you alot more performance!

Or you can get about $15 worth of parts from a few places, build your own and have the same performance without giving somebody else $95.... and you can use that $95 for something else.

Why buy when you can build it your self?

DYI CAI? Sounds good to me

You got my full attention.. Please expand

I would love to build my own CAI.. If you know where the parts can be obtain or how it can be made, please share this info with me (the ignorant newbie).

As far as I have searched, I cannot find a CAI like the ones from Cattman or Warpspeed for less than $200. I cannot even find one used!

Re: DYI CAI? Sounds good to me

I haven't done one for the Max yet... but all cars are the same... you gotta look at what the stock intake track looks like. then look at the CAI and even the pop charger... then decide where the air is gonna be the coolest (not behind the radiator) then build a box out of a light weight sheet of Aluminum, or plastic, put the filter in there, make sure the MAF is in a location not unlike the stock location... make srue all the sensors are attached correctly and bam.

There isn't a whole lot of engineering behind most consumer 'hop up' intakes. So unless a company can show me how they compensated for resonances, and did calculations on static pressure, velocity etc I will conclude that all they did was test for fit, not for absoloute performance. and I can do that myself.

dyo cai

i made my own cai.. not hard.. the materials plus the ractor carb. fiber filter cost me a total of about 50 bucks. went to home depot, got 3" flex duct, attached to the intake, went around battery, and down beside fender well where it fits snuggly, and can be seen if you look right in front of my left wheel sticking out the bottom.. works great, and i can tell a big difference from stock!. tooke me about 15 minutes to install

Speaking of a cheap CAI-->

I saw te Ractive CAI on a 3rd gen up at the NE meet a while back. Ratcive Cone intake($30)(not shown) with Ractive cold air extension "piping"($63)--> CLICK to see it! when I saw it in person, it looked a little cleaner than the othe DIY CAIs I've seen, but no matter how they look I'm sure thay all perform pretty much the same..

Yes its true, BUT.....

only if you are driving in water up to the mid level of the wheel or higher(which would be extremely stupid to do anyways)...I've neither seen nor heard of this happening to any of the Max's on here with CAIs. basically rain and snow won't harm it, but if you plan to drive through the Mississippi river one day thats another story..

yeah, if you have a cai only way you suck water in your engine if you drive through a monsoon. i still would not take that chance (seeing how i am a paranoid freak), i would get a by pass valve (won't hurt performance either).

I made my own CAI

I posted about it awhile back, but still no picks. It works great, I hang out with some of the maxPerformance members and I beat acouple of fourth gens w/POOP chargers when street racing (boy they were ****ed ) "there must be something wrong with my car" hehe . Those POOP chargers suck in hot engine temps. I'm using 4"ID 4.5"OD rubber sewage hose, the stuff is great and at $5/foot .
Whoever wants to do their own shouldnt use PVC.

Something I noticed while poking around in my engine bay (I haven't had time to work on this car yet) is that if the battery is relocated to the trunk, and you move the Fuse/relay box to the side, a really easy CAI could be built right around there, just bold a K&N cone filter on to the stock MAF, and build a box around it and the headlight. The next step would be to get rid of the intake resonator with some nice piping, Light weight Stove pipe for gas water heaters would work but look ugly, or some really pretty Stainless pipe would look nice but cost some $$$...
