Exhaust note change when in water!

Hey guys I got a odd question but whenever I hit a puddle of water on the side of the road my exhaust note becomes much louder for about 30-60 seconds after the impact of the water. So my question is what causes the sound is water getting in the exhaust ??? I don't have a clue!

Thanks for any input!

sounds like you've got a crack in your exhaust somewhere.
splash water on it and the metal contracts, making the crack bigger and more noise.

Well I have replaced my Y-pipe with a warp speed performance one and I have a 2 month old cat back new all pre welded so no cracks there. The only thing that is still old is the exhaust manifolds and the cat.

I also have a exhaust rattle problem at about 2100 RPMs and the cat shield is off so the only other shield I can think of is the shield that is on the exhaust manifold itself. I think thats the shield that is rattling.

could also be the guts in the catalytic convertor rattling, or parts of it inside the muffler.
I had a cat explode on me a few years back (after it rattled for months), and when it did, it launched marble-sized chunks of cat into the muffler, which got stuck inside if and rattled around from then. I finally got pissed and bought a new exhaust. noise gone.

and just because it's new doesn't mean it's not damaged or leaking. it could be a cracked weld, it could be a cracked resonator (you'd be amazed how many I've seen), or it could be a bad gasket on either end of your cat where things mate up. I've seen them all leak over the years.. on my car and others.

Well then I guess I can try to tighten the gaskets on either side of the cat but when I installed the cat back I had the car on a lift and I remote started the car and there were no leaks.( I went around with my hand to feel any leaks but none were found ) So water couldnt be getting as high as the exhaust manifolds could it I was kind of ruling them out due to there location.

I really don't think its the cat rattling although I have never heard one rattle but It sounds like a heat sheild tack weld has broken and is rattling.

The welds in the cat could be cracked how could I check to see ?

BTW I put new gaskets on either side of the cat !

If you cranked them down too hard, especially on the Y pipe to cat, you can bend the flanges and they will leak. sometimes not right at first, but a week or more down the road, they'll develop leaks.

o well I don't think they were that tight

So has anyone else had this problem and had a solution other than exhaust leak?

About a week after i had my warpspeed pipe istalled, one of my exhaust hangers broke about mid rear on the car[in the bend around the gas tank]

It was rattling around against the pipe..so check this area for a possible broke hanger...And while your under there, give the entire exhaust system a good inspection for obvious problems...
